Abstract

An optical switch for performing high extinction ratio switching of an optical signal includes a beam polarizing element and one or more optical elements. The optical elements are configured to direct an optical signal along a first or second optical path based on the polarization state of the optical signal as it passes through the optical elements. The optical switch performs high extinction ratio switching of the optical signal by preventing unwanted optical energy from entering an output port by using an absorptive or reflective optical element or by directing the unwanted optical energy along a different optical path.

Claims (12)

1. A wavelength selective switch comprising:

a wavelength dispersive element for separating an input beam into its wavelength components;

a liquid crystal switch for directing each of the wavelength components to a primary optical path and a residual optical path, wherein the liquid crystal switch includes a beam polarization unit that is positioned in an optical path of one of the wavelength components and in the primary optical path and the residual optical path of said one of the wavelength components, the beam polarization unit comprising an array of liquid crystal (LC) pixels, one of which positioned in an optical path of each of the wavelength components and the primary optical path and the residual optical path of said each of the wavelength components;

a beam steering unit for directing each of the wavelength components to the primary optical path and the residual optical path;

a beam reflecting element positioned in the primary optical path and the residual optical path to cause a light beam traveling along the primary optical path to reflect off the beam reflecting element and pass through the beam polarization unit and a light beam traveling along the residual optical path to reflect off the beam reflecting element and pass through the beam polarization unit; and

a quarter wave plate positioned between the beam steering unit and the beam reflecting element.

2. The wavelength selective switch according to claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one input port, at least two output ports, and at least two loss ports; and

a reflecting unit optically coupled to the input port and optically coupled to the output and loss ports,

wherein the liquid crystal switch is disposed in a first optical path between the input port and the reflecting unit and a second optical path between the reflecting unit and the output and loss ports, and the wavelength dispersive element is disposed in the first optical path between the input port and the liquid crystal switch and in the second optical path between the liquid crystal switch and the output and loss ports.

3. The wavelength selective switch according to claim 1 , wherein said one of the wavelength components has a single primary optical path and a plurality of residual optical paths and the beam polarization unit of the liquid crystal switch is positioned in the single primary optical path and the plurality of residual optical paths of said one of the wavelength components.

4. The wavelength selective switch according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid crystal switch includes two beam polarization units, both of which are positioned in an optical path of one of the wavelength components and in the primary optical path and the residual optical path of said one of the wavelength components.
