Abstract

Disclosed embodiments may help a balloon network to provide substantially continuous service in a given geographic area. An example method may be carried out at a balloon that is at a location associated with the first geographic area in a balloon network that includes a plurality of geographic areas. The balloon may determine that it should update its balloon-state in accordance with a balloon-state profile for the first geographic area. Then, in response, the balloon may determine the balloon-state profile for the first geographic area, which may include one or more state parameters for balloons operating in the first geographic area. The balloon may then operate according to the balloon-state profile for the first geographic area.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the one or more operational parameters comprise one or more of: (a) at least one parameter indicating a communication protocol or protocols to be used in the geographic area, (b) at least one parameter providing routing information for the geographic area, (c) at least one parameter relating to transmission power for balloons operating in the geographic area, (d) at least one parameter indicative of error correction coding that should be implemented by a balloon in the geographic area, (e) at least one parameter indicative of a desired topology for the balloon network in the geographic area, (f) at least one parameter that provides information related to ground-based stations or other fixed systems in the geographic area, (g) at least one parameter indicative of power management that should be implemented by a balloon in the geographic area, (h) at least one parameter affecting the horizontal and/or altitudinal movement of the balloon, and/or (i) at least one parameter providing information for complying with a legal requirement for the geographic area.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the balloon to operate according to the balloon-state profile for the first geographic area comprises updating the balloon-state for the balloon based on the balloon-state profile for the first geographic area.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having program instructions stored thereon that are executable by at least one processor, the program instructions comprising:

instructions for determining that a balloon should be updated with balloon-state information for a first geographic area in a balloon network, wherein the balloon is at a location associated with the first geographic area, and wherein the balloon network comprises a plurality of geographic areas;

instructions for, in response to determining that the balloon-state information should be updated:

determining a balloon-state profile for the first geographic area, wherein the balloon-state profile comprises one or more state parameters for balloons operating in the second geographic area; and

causing the balloon to operate according to the second balloon-state profile;

subsequently determining that the balloon is at a location associated with a second geographic area of the balloon network;

determining that the balloon-state of the balloon should be updated in accordance with a balloon-state profile for the second geographic area; and

in response to determining that the balloon-state should be updated in accordance with a balloon-state profile for the second geographic area:

determining the balloon-state profile for the second geographic area, wherein the balloon-state profile for the second geographic area comprises one or more state parameters for balloons operating in the second geographic area; and

causing the balloon to operate according to the balloon-state profile for the second geographic area.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , further comprising instructions for determining that the balloon is at a location associated with the first geographic area and responsively determining that the balloon should be updated with the balloon-state information for the first geographic area.

14. A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining, by a first balloon that is operable as a node in a balloon network that comprises a plurality of geographic areas, that the first balloon is at a location associated with the first geographic area in the balloon network;
