Abstract

An alignment member is externally disposed on a toner cartridge for alignment with a developer unit in an electrophotographic image forming device. In one embodiment of the invention, the alignment member includes a first portion to properly align the developer unit relative to the toner cartridge and a second portion to maintain the proper alignment of the developer unit. The alignment ensures proper installation of the toner cartridge into the image forming device and prevents undesirable spill of toner.

Claims (24)

1. A toner cartridge for use with a developer unit of an image forming device, comprising:

a housing having a top, a bottom and four sides, the housing having a reservoir for holding toner;

an outlet on a first of the four sides of the housing for transferring toner from the reservoir to the developer unit through an inlet on the developer unit; and

an alignment member projecting from the first side of the housing at a fixed position below the outlet, the alignment member having a first surface portion for engaging and guiding the developer unit to a reference position as the toner cartridge is inserted into the image forming device, the first surface portion leading to a second surface portion positioned above the first surface portion for engaging the developer unit as the toner cartridge is removed from the image forming device, the first surface portion forming an acute angle with respect to a vertical direction of insertion of the toner cartridge in a first direction and the second surface portion forming an acute angle with respect to the vertical direction of insertion of the toner cartridge in a second direction opposite the first direction.

The toner cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a third surface portion positioned intermediate the first surface portion and the second surface portion for maintaining the developer unit in the reference position as the toner cartridge is inserted into the image forming device, the third surface portion being substantially parallel to the vertical direction of insertion.

3. The alignment member of claim 2 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion, and the third surface portion form a contiguous arcuate surface.

4. The alignment member of claim 2 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion and the third surface portion are three adjoining planar surfaces.

The toner cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a shutter positioned adjacent the outlet and movable between an open orientation to allow toner flow through the outlet and a closed orientation to prevent toner flow through the outlet and a shutter actuation mechanism coupled to the shutter for engaging an actuation pin positioned on the developer unit to move the shutter between the open and the closed orientations.

6. A toner cartridge for use with a developer unit of an image forming device, comprising:

a housing having a top, a bottom and four sides, the housing having a reservoir for holding toner;

an outlet on a first of the four sides of the housing for transferring toner from the reservoir to the developer unit through an inlet on the developer unit; and

an alignment member fixedly projecting from the first side of the housing below the outlet and having a contact surface facing a second of the four sides of the housing, the second side being generally orthogonal to the first side, the contact surface having a first surface portion that projects further toward the second side of the housing as the first surface portion travels up the first side of the housing, the first surface portion leading to a second surface portion positioned above the first surface portion, the second surface portion projecting further toward the second side of the housing as the second surface portion travels down the first side of the housing.

7. The toner cartridge of claim 6 , further comprising a third surface portion positioned intermediate the first surface portion and the second surface portion, the third surface portion being substantially parallel to a vertical direction of insertion of the toner cartridge.

8. The alignment member of claim 7 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion, and the third surface portion form a contiguous arcuate surface.

9. The alignment member of claim 7 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion and the third surface portion are three adjoining planar surfaces.

The toner cartridge of claim 6 , further comprising a shutter positioned adjacent the outlet and movable between an open orientation to allow toner flow through the outlet and a closed orientation to prevent toner flow through the outlet and a shutter actuation mechanism coupled to the shutter for engaging an actuation pin positioned on the developer unit to move the shutter between the open and the closed orientations.

11. A toner cartridge for use with a developer unit of an image forming device, comprising:

a housing having a top, a bottom and four sides, the housing having a reservoir for holding toner;

an outlet on a first of the four sides of the housing for transferring toner from the reservoir to the developer unit through an inlet on the developer unit; and

an alignment member immovably affixed to the first side of the housing below the outlet, the alignment member having a first surface portion for engaging and guiding the developer unit in a first direction generally orthogonal to the first side of the housing as the toner cartridge is inserted into the image forming device, the first surface portion leading to a second surface portion positioned above the first surface portion for engaging and guiding the developer unit in a second direction generally orthogonal to the first side of the housing opposite the first direction as the toner cartridge is inserted further into the image forming device.

The toner cartridge of claim 11 , further comprising a third surface portion positioned intermediate the first surface portion and the second surface portion for maintaining the position of the developer unit as the toner cartridge is inserted into the image forming device, the third surface portion being substantially parallel to a vertical direction of insertion.

13. The alignment member of claim 12 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion, and the third surface portion form a contiguous arcuate surface.

14. The alignment member of claim 12 , wherein the first surface portion, the second surface portion and the third surface portion are three adjoining planar surfaces.

The toner cartridge of claim 11 , further comprising a shutter positioned adjacent the outlet and movable between an open orientation to allow toner flow through the outlet and a closed orientation to prevent toner flow through the outlet and a shutter actuation mechanism coupled to the shutter for engaging an actuation pin positioned on the developer unit to move the shutter between the open and the closed orientations.
