Abstract

An orthopedic device for implanting between adjacent vertebrae comprising: an arcuate balloon and a hardenable material within said balloon. In some embodiments, the balloon has a footprint that substantially corresponds to a perimeter of a vertebral endplate. An inflatable device is inserted through a cannula into an intervertebral space and oriented so that, upon expansion, a natural angle between vertebrae will be at least partially restored. At least one component selected from the group consisting of a load-bearing component and an osteobiologic component is directed into the inflatable device through a fluid communication means.

Claims (49)

1. A method of implanting a spinal fusion device, comprising:

removing disc tissue from an intervertebral disc space;

translaterally introducing a strut into the intervertebral disc space; and

placing the strut within the intervertebral disc space such that the strut extends essentially transversely across a vertebral endplate to contact a cortical rim of the endplate upon both lateral sidewalls thereof and terminates anterior to a posterior sidewall thereof,

wherein the strut is effective to assist in promoting fusion of the intervertebral disc space,

wherein the strut has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in the range of 3% to 40% of the vertebral endplate.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of removing disc tissue occurs before the step of translaterally introducing.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut is introduced through a cannula.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the cannula has an inside diameter in the range of 3 mm to 18 mm.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of introducing to the disc space a material effective to induce bone growth.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the material is an osteobiologic component.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the material includes at least one of a bone morphogenic protein, a growth differentiation factor, and a transforming growth factor.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut occupies an anterior portion of the vertebral endplate.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut has an arcuate shape.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in a range of 10% to 30% of the vertebral endplate.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in a range of 10% to 20% of the vertebral endplate.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the strut has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in a range of 5% to 10% of the vertebral endplate.

13. A method of promoting fusion of an intervertebral disc space, comprising:

removing disc tissue from an intervertebral disc space,

translaterally introducing an implant into the intervertebral disc space so as to extend essentially transversely across a vertebral endplate, and

contacting the implant to a cortical rim of the endplate upon opposed lateral portions of the cortical rim,

wherein the implant terminates anterior to a posterior portion of the cortical rim,

wherein the implant has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in the range of 3% to 40% of the vertebral endplate.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of removing disc tissue occurs before the step of translaterally introducing.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implant is introduced through a cannula.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising the step of introducing to the disc space a material effective to induce bone growth.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the material is an osteobiologic component.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the material includes at least one of a bone morphogenic protein, a growth differentiation factor, and a transforming growth factor.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implant occupies an anterior portion of the vertebral endplate.

20. A method of introducing an implant to an intervertebral space, comprising:

performing a discectomy on an intervertebral space,

delivering an implant through an instrument having an inside diameter, the implant having a long axis and a short axis that is perpendicular to the long axis; and

translaterally introducing the implant to the intervertebral space such that the long axis of the implant extends essentially transversely across a vertebral endplate and such that the implant extends from a first lateral portion of a cortical rim of the vertebral endplate to a second opposite lateral portion of the cortical rim and terminates anterior to a posterior portion of the cortical rim,

the implant being effective to assist in promoting fusion of the disc space,

wherein the implant has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in the range of 3% to 40% of the vertebral endplate.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the implant comprises:

a) a first portion comprising a lower bearing wall and an upper angled wall;

b) a second portion comprising an upper wall and a lower angled wall, the second portion being ramped up the upper angled wall of the first portion to achieve distraction.

22. A method of promoting fusion of an intervertebral space, comprising:

removing disc tissue from a lumber intervertebral disc space,

translaterally introducing a strut into the lumbar intervertebral space through a cannula; and

placing the strut within the lumbar intervertebral space such that the strut extends essentially transversely across a vertebral endplate from a first lateral portion of a cortical rim of the vertebral endplate to a second, opposite lateral portion of the cortical rim,

wherein the strut terminates anterior to a posterior portion of the cortical rim,

wherein the strut has a footprint such that it occupies an area of the vertebral endplate in a range of 3% to 40% of the vertebral endplate.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the cannula has an inside diameter in the range of 3 mm to 18 mm.

24. The method of claim 22 , wherein the step of removing disc tissue occurs before the step of translaterally introducing.

25. The method of claim 22 , further comprising the step of introducing to the disc space a material effective to induce bone growth.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the material is an osteobiologic component.

27. The method of claim 25 , wherein the material includes at least one of a bone morphogenic protein, a growth differentiation factor, and a transforming growth factor.
