Abstract

A method and apparatus for dynamically transcoding and delivering variable bit rate media files delivers media files to client systems. The media server dynamically transcodes a content file to a bit rate requested by a client using an original content file or other transcoded content files. The media server can dynamically select a segment of a content file to transcode. The file format required by the client is determined and the transcoded segment is formatted to the file format. The formatted segment is delivered to the client.

Claims (63)

1. A method comprising:

storing, by a server, a content file transcoded at a plurality of bit rates;

receiving, by the server, a request, from a client device, for the content file;

determining, by the server, a bit rate associated with the request for the content file;

determining, by the server, a segment of the content file to be transcoded to the determined bit rate;

determining, by the server, that the determined bit rate does not match any of the plurality of bit rates;

determining, by the server and based on determining that the determined bit rate does not match any of the plurality of bit rates, one of the plurality of bit rates that is closest to the determined bit rate;

transcoding, by the server and using the content file transcoded at the closest one of the plurality of bit rates, the segment to the determined bit rate; and

outputting, by the server, the transcoded segment to the client device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

automatically determining the bit rate associated with the request for the content file.

3. The method of claim 2 , where the bit rate associated with the request for the content file is automatically determined based on a type of the client device.

4. The method of claim 2 , where the bit rate associated with the request for the content file is automatically determined based on a format associated with the request.

5. The method of claim 1 , where, when determining the bit rate associated with the request for the content file, the method further comprises:

determining a type of the client device;

retrieving, from a memory, one or more characteristics associated with the type of the client device;

determining, based on the retrieved one or more characteristics, that the client device requires a particular type of transcoded content file; and

determining, based on the particular type of transcoded content file, the bit rate.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transcoding the content file at the plurality of bit rates, the plurality of bit rates being associated with a plurality of popular bit rates.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the transcoded segment.

8. A device comprising:

a processor to:

receive a request, from a client device, for a content file;

determine a bit rate associated with the request for the content file;

determine a segment of the content file to be transcoded to the determined bit rate;

determine that the determined bit rate does not match any of a plurality of bit rates;

determine, based on determining that the determined bit rate does not match any of the plurality of bit rates, one of the plurality of bit rates that is closest to the determined bit rate;

transcode, using a content file transcoded at the closest one of the plurality of bit rates, the segment to the determined bit rate; and

output the transcoded segment to the client device.

9. The device of claim 8 , where the processor is further to:

automatically determine the bit rate associated with the request for the content file.

10. The device of claim 9 , where the bit rate associated with the request for the content file is automatically determined based on a type of the client device.

11. The device of claim 9 , where the bit rate associated with the request for the content file is automatically determined based on a format associated with the request.

12. The device of claim 8 , where, when determining the bit rate associated with the request for the content file, the processor is further to:

determine a type of the client device;

retrieve, from a memory, one or more characteristics associated with the type of the client device;

determine, based on the retrieved one or more characteristics, that the client device requires a particular type of transcoded content file; and

determine, based on the particular type of transcoded content file, the bit rate.

13. The device of claim 8 , where the processor is further to:

transcode the content file at the plurality of bit rates, the plurality of bit rates being associated with a plurality of popular bit rates.

14. The device of claim 8 , where the processor is further to:

store the transcoded segment.

15. A system comprising:

one or more devices to:

store a content file transcoded at a plurality of bit rates;

receive a request, from a client device, for the content file encoded for a first bit rate;

determine, based on receiving the request, a segment of the content file to be transcoded to the first bit rate;

determine that the determined bit rate does not match any of the plurality of bit rates;

determine, based on determining that the determined bit rate does not match any of the plurality of bit rates, one of the plurality of bit rates that is closest to the determined bit rate;

transcode, using the content file transcoded at the closest one of the plurality of bit rates, the segment to the determined bit rate; and

output the transcoded segment to the client device.

16. The system of claim 15 , where the one or more devices are further to:

determine a type of format for the transcoded segment based on a type of the client device.

17. The system of claim 15 , where the one or more devices are further to:

delete the transcoded segment after outputting the transcoded segment to the client device.

18. The system of claim 15 , where the one or more devices are further to:

transcode the content file at the plurality of bit rates, the plurality of bit rates being based on previous bit rate requests associated with the content file.

19. The system of claim 15 , where the one or more devices are further to:

transcode the content file at the plurality of bit rates, the plurality of bit rates being associated with a plurality of popular bit rates.

20. The system of claim 15 , where the one or more devices are further to:

store the transcoded segment.
