Abstract

A photovoltaic (PV) module framing and coupling system enables the attachment of PV modules to a roof or other mounting surface without requiring the use of separate structural support members which attach directly to and span between multiple PV modules in a formed PV array. The apparatus provides a parallel coupling for securely interlocking the outside surfaces of parallel frame members together in a side to side arrangement to form an array with improved structural load distribution. The coupling may attach to a slot in the frame at substantially any position along the length of the frame thereby enabling the interconnection of adjacent PV modules along both an x and y axis. The apparatus may further provide a rotating portion and locking portion, mounting brackets for direct connection to a mounting surface, grounding teeth, and a twist-lock engagement means for interlocking and aligning PV modules in the array.

Claims (33)

1 . A snap-in bracket for attaching a device to a photovoltaic module, comprising:

a spring and an engaging portion, wherein a force applied to said photovoltaic module by said spring at least partially engages said engaging portion with a female portion of said photovoltaic module.

2 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said engaging portion comprises a tooth.

3 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 2 , wherein said tooth catches behind a lip of said female portion of said photovoltaic module.

4 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said spring is made of sheet metal.

5 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said spring applies said force to a photovoltaic module frame.

6 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said spring applies said force to said female portion.

7 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said engaging portion engages a photovoltaic module frame.

8 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein a frame of said photovoltaic module comprises said female portion and said engaging portion engages a slot within said female portion.

9 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said snap-in bracket is a one-piece device.

10 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 9 , wherein said snap-in bracket is made of a single material.

11 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said snap-in bracket attaches an electrical or electronic device to said photovoltaic module.

12 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said snap-in bracket connects an electrical conductor to a photovoltaic module.

13 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said clip is generally L-shaped.

14 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said clip further comprises an attachment mechanism adapted for attaching said device to said snap-in bracket.

15 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 1 , wherein said snap-in bracket connects a box to said photovoltaic module.

16 . A snap-in bracket for photovoltaic modules, comprising:

an engaging portion adapted to engage with a groove in a frame of a photovoltaic module, wherein said engaging portion comprises a tooth for engagement behind a lip of said groove and said snap-in bracket connects an accessory device to a frame of said photovoltaic module.

17 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said tooth catches behind a lip of a groove in a frame of said photovoltaic module.

18 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , further comprising a spring.

19 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 18 , wherein said spring is made of sheet metal.

20 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 18 , wherein said spring applies a force to a photovoltaic module frame.

21 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 18 , wherein a force applied to said photovoltaic module by said spring at least partially engages said engaging portion with said photovoltaic module.

22 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 18 , wherein said spring applies a force to an inner portion of said groove.

23 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 18 , wherein said spring is adapted to move laterally and vertically relative to said photovoltaic module upon engagement with said photovoltaic module.

24 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said engaging portion cuts into said frame to provide a ground bond between said snap-in bracket and said frame.

25 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said snap-in bracket is a one-piece device.

26 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 25 , wherein said snap-in bracket is made of a single material.

27 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said snap-in bracket attaches an electrical or electronic device to said photovoltaic module.

28 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said snap-in bracket connects an electrical conductor to a photovoltaic module.

29 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said clip is generally L-shaped.

30 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said clip further comprises an attachment mechanism adapted for attaching said accessory device to said snap-in bracket.

31 . A snap-in bracket according to claim 16 , wherein said snap-in bracket connects a box to said photovoltaic module.
