System and method for high throughput preparation of rubber-modified asphalt cement
This invention encompasses rubber modified asphalt cement compositions, as well as systems, apparatuses, methods for preparing, as well as methods for using rubber-modified asphalt cement compositions.
1. A rubber-modified asphalt cement composition prepared by:
i) contacting asphalt with tire rubber granules to form a mixture;
ii) heating the mixture; and
iii) passing the heated mixture through at least one high shear mixer;
wherein the rubber-modified asphalt cement composition:
a) is fully integrated;
b) has greater than about 5 wt. % of the tire rubber, said tire rubber having an average size of less than 20 microns; and
c) has less than 8 wt. % rubber that is in a solid state.
2. A coating composition according to the rubber-modified asphalt cement composition of claim 1 .
3. The coating of claim 2 , wherein fully integrated comprises an integration value of at least 90.
4. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the mixture is heated to a temperature greater than 500° F.
5. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the heated mixture is passed through the at least one high shear mixer for greater than 30 minutes.
6. The coating of claim 3 , wherein said rubber-modified asphalt cement composition comprises about 65-95 wt. % of asphalt and about 5-35wt. % of tire rubber granules.
7. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the coating is a surface coating.
8. The coating of claim 7 , wherein the surface is a paved surface.
9. The coating of claim 8 , wherein the paved surface is a roadway.
10. The coating of claim 8 , wherein the paved surface is a driving surface.
11. The coating of claim 7 , wherein the surface is an industrial surface.
12. The coating of claim 11 , wherein the industrial surface is steel or concrete.
13. The coating of claim 11 , wherein the coating enhances corrosion resistance of the industrial surface.
14. The coating of claim 11 , wherein the coating improves fire resistance of the industrial surface.
15. The coating of claim 7 , wherein the surface is a building surface.
16. The coating of claim 15 , wherein the building surface is a roof surface.
17. The coating of claim 16 , wherein the roof surface is an asphalt roof surface or an asphalt roof shingle.
18. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the coating is a binder composition, a slurry seal, a surface-sealer, or a seal-coat.
19. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the coating is a cured coating.
20. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the coating is applied by computer rate controlled asphalt spreader truckers, hand spray wands, or squeegee.
21. The coating of claim 3 , wherein the rubber-modified asphalt cement comprises less than 6 wt. % tire rubber that is in a solid state.
22. The coating of claim 3 , wherein said rubber-modified asphalt cement composition comprises about 5-15 wt. % of tire rubber granules.
