Abstract

An integrated tomosynthesis/molecular breast imaging device having improved sensitivity includes tomosynthesis imaging components and molecular breast imaging components. The imaging components may be used individually or in combination to provide a system with improved sensitivity and specificity. Molecular imaging components may be smoothly advanced or withdrawn depending upon the desired imaging mode. The system supports both PET and SPECT imaging and enables SPECT collimation to be modified in accordance with image capture requirements.

Claims (16)

1. A method of obtaining a molecular breast image using a gamma camera comprising a collimator includes the steps of: immobilizing a breast; obtaining a first exposure of the breast to identify a suspect lesion; modifying the collimator of the gamma camera; and obtaining a second exposure of the breast, wherein the step of modifying the collimator focuses imaging on the suspect lesion.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein a first duration of the first exposure is smaller than a second duration of the second exposure.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of modifying the collimator of the gamma camera is motor controlled.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of modifying the collimator to focus on a suspect lesion such that a field of view of the gamma camera after modification of the collimator is less than the field of view of the gamma camera before modification of the collimator.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of modifying the collimator results in collimator of a different type.

6. The method of the claim 5 , wherein the collimator of a different type has an angular collimation.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collimator is programmable such that the step of modifying the collimator selectively modifies the collimation angle.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gamma camera consists of a single gamma camera.

9. A method of obtaining a molecular breast image using a gamma camera comprising a collimator includes the steps of: immobilizing a breast by compression; obtaining a first exposure of the breast; modifying a position of the gamma camera by moving an articulating arm such that the gamma camera can be pivoted in at least two dimensions, wherein the articulating arm comprises a first portion and a second portion, the first portion rotatably coupled to the second portion; and obtaining a second exposure of the breast.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of modifying the position of the gamma camera directs the gamma camera towards at least one of the axilla and the chest wall.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of modifying the position is motor controlled.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of immobilizing the breast is accomplished via a compression paddle and the position of the gamma camera after modification is within a well of the compression paddle.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the position of the gamma camera after modification is such that an imaging face of the gamma camera remains flush against a rectangular base of the compression paddle.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the articulating arm is coupled to a mount on a top of the gamma camera.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the articulating arm comprises a pair of arms and the arms are coupled to sides of the gamma camera.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of modifying the position of the gamma camera comprises moving a leading edge of the gamma camera along an underhanded arc path.
