Abstract

A known amount of marker may be added to a pressurized hydrocarbon fluid, or combined with an additive to form a mixture, and the mixture may be added to a pressurized hydrocarbon fluid. An amount of the marker in the hydrocarbon fluid may be determined. An amount of the additive in the hydrocarbon fluid may be determined based on the amount of the marker in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid. An inline system may be used for detection of a marker in a pressurized hydrocarbon fluid. The system is fixed in a pressurized hydrocarbon fluid supply line such that pressurized hydrocarbon fluid flowing from a first location to a second location in the supply line passes through the detection system. The hydrocarbon fluid may be a liquid or a gas. The markers may include a variety of optical markers, such as fluorescent markers. Detection of the markers may include, for example, fluorescence detection.

Claims (28)

1. A method of treating pressurized hydrocarbon fluid, the method comprising:

flowing a first portion of a pressurized hydrocarbon fluid through a detection apparatus fixed in a supply line;

flowing a second portion of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid through an electronics unit coupled to the detection apparatus and to the supply line; and

determining an amount of a marker in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid in the supply line with the detection apparatus, wherein determining the amount of the marker in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid is initiated by the electronics unit while the second portion of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid flows through the electronics unit.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising combining the marker with an additive to form a mixture with a known concentration of the marker, and wherein adding the marker to the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid comprises adding the mixture to the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising determining an amount of the additive in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid based on the amount of the marker in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid includes liquefied petroleum gas or liquefied natural gas.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of a detergent, a lubricity improver, an octane enhancer, and any combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining comprises spectroscopic analysis of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the spectroscopic analysis is achieved with an inline apparatus.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the amount of the marker in the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid further includes determining an authenticity of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring or adjusting a temperature of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid with a thermoprobe.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detection apparatus comprises an optical cell configured such that pressurized hydrocarbon fluid flowing through the detection apparatus flows through the cell, d wherein the cell is optically coupled to an optical head comprising a detector.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the detection apparatus is intrinsically safe, wherein the electronics unit is explosion proof, wherein the optical head is intrinsically safe.

The method claim 10 , further comprising activating an explosion-proof pressure switch by a drop in pressure to allow the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid to flow to a processing unit, wherein the processing unit is operable to communicate with the optical head to initiate operation of the detector.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

providing data from the processing unit to a general packet radio service unit, and

transmitting data through a transmitter of the general packet radio service unit to a central or mobile unit for storage, analysis, or a combination thereof.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adding a known amount of the marker to the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid at a first location in the supply line; and

transporting the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid from the first location in the supply line to a second location in the supply line.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid flows parallel in relation to the second portion of the pressurized hydrocarbon fluid.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronics unit comprises a processing unit, the method further comprising:

limiting an amount of power transferred from the processing unit to the detection apparatus by a barrier board.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker comprises an anthraquinone dye or a diazo dye.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marks comprises a squairaine dye, a phthalocyanine dye, a naphthalocyanine dye, a croconic acid derivative dye, or a pyrazinoporphyrazine dye.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker comprises a ketone, an aldehyde, an ester, an amide, an anhydride, or a carboxylic acid.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the marker comprises a polyamine, an isocyanate, or both.
