Abstract

The present invention generally relates to methods, compositions and uses thereof for enhancing vascularization of a tissue or cell transplant for transplantation into a subject. In particular, one aspect of the present invention provides methods and compositions comprising the use of a population of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells to encapsulate or surround a tissue or cell transplant to enhance vascularization of the tissue or cell transplant. Another aspect of the present invention provides methods and compositions for enhancing vascularization of a tissue or cell transplant by combining a population of SVF cells with a tissue or cell transplant to form a transplant mixed with SVF cells. In some embodiments, the SVF cells can be on the surface or embedded within a three-dimensional matrix. In some embodiments, the SVF cells can be generically engineered to secrete therapeutic proteins or pro-angiogenic factors.

Claims (8)

1. A composition comprising a tissue or cell transplant and a population of cells comprising stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells, wherein the population of cells comprising SVF cells coats at least a portion of the outer surface of the tissue or cell transplant, wherein the SVF cells present on the surface of, or embedded within a three-dimensional matrix comprises microvessel fragments and wherein the population of cells comprising SVF cells are not cultured by incubation for a period of time prior to contracting the tissue of cell transplant.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the population of SVF cells substantially covers the outer surface of the tissue or cell transplant.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein a single cell layer or a multiple cell layer of SVF cells covers at least 70% of the outer surface of the tissue or cell transplant.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the population of cells comprising SVF cells is present on the surface of, or embedded within a three-dimensional matrix, wherein the population of SVF cells contacts the tissue of the cell transplant.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the tissue or cell transplant is genetically engineered.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the tissue or cell transplant is a tissue engineered tissue.

7. The composition of claim 1 wherein inosculation is established post-transplantation.

8. The composition of claim 7 wherein establishing inosculation comprises a functional response to a glucose challenge.
