Abstract

A method and apparatus for inspecting and tallying pipe in a well completion system. In one embodiment, at least one sensor determines the length of a pipe and/or at least one thread protector sensor determines whether the thread protectors are removed from both ends of the pipe. The sensors may be located in a mast assembly, a pipe arm, a walkway adjacent said pipe arm used to urge pipe towards the pipe arm, or various other places as desired. A moveable control van with a control system receives signals from the sensors. The control van comprises a system which also keeps a tally of the total amount of pipe currently in the wellbore. In one embodiment, memory chips may be used on the pipe to store a history of the pipe. The sensors then communicate this information back to the control system.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said at least one thread protector sensor produces a verification signal, which is transmitted to said control van.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said at least one thread protector sensor comprises an acoustic sensor, an electromagnetic sensor, a light sensor, a laser sensor, or combinations thereof.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein said at least one thread protector sensor comprises a camera.

6. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said at least one thread protector sensor is mounted to check said pipe while said pipe is positioned in a substantially horizontal position.

7. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising the catwalk located adjacent to said mast assembly, and wherein said at least one pipe length detector or at least one thread protector sensor is positioned adjacent to said mast assembly.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said control system is configured to compute and store a total length of pipe in said wellbore.

9. An apparatus for handling pipe, comprising:

a control van comprising a control system;

a rig transporter;

a mast assembly carried by said rig transporter, wherein said mast assembly is movable between a first lowered position with respect to said rig transporter and a second upright position with respect to said rig transporter, wherein said mast assembly is connected to a first support base and a second support base, and wherein said first support base and said second support base extend substantially perpendicular to and on opposite sides of the wellbore, the mast assembly, and the rig transporter;

a transportable pipe handling system operable for moving said pipe into and out of said mast assembly, which is controllable from said control van; and

a sensor configured to detect a total length of the pipe moving into and out of said mast assembly.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a pipe inspection system comprising a scanning device and a transmitter for sending inspection data to said control system in said control van before said pipe is threaded into a drill string, wherein said scanning device is located on a pipe tub, a pipe arm, a catwalk, or combinations thereof.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said pipe inspection system comprises an acoustic sensor, an electromagnetic sensor, a laser sensor, a light sensor, or combinations thereof.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said pipe inspection system comprises at least one thread protector sensor to verify that thread protectors have been removed from both ends of said pipe before said pipe is threaded into said drill string, and wherein said at least one thread protector sensor electronically communicates with said control van.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein said at least one thread protector sensor is located on the catwalk adjacent to said mast assembly.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said pipe inspection system further comprises at least one of an RFID chip or a barcode.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said control system creates a profile of said pipe comprising at least a length of said pipe.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein said control system computes and stores a total length of said pipe in a wellbore.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein said profile of said pipe comprises total time in a wellbore, a record of number of times run into a well, a record of torque applied, a record of said pipe and the fluids that flow within each of said pipe, or combinations thereof.
