Abstract

An ejection mechanism, which in one embodiment selectively ejects pipe joints to either side of a pipe arm and method for manufacturing the same. A pipe arm contains a plurality of pipe receptacles for receiving pipe joints. Pipe ejection arms are operatively connected to an ejection control mechanism. In one embodiment, at least one torsional member and/or at least one hydraulic actuator allow an operator to selectively eject pipe joints to either lateral side of the pipe arm as needed during drilling and production operations.

Claims (22)

1. A pipe ejection mechanism for ejecting pipes, comprising:

a pipe arm movable between a lowered position and a raised position;

at least one receptacle on said pipe arm operable for receiving at least one pipe;

a plurality of first pipe ejector arms for moving said at least one pipe from said pipe arm in a first lateral direction with respect to said pipe arm, wherein said plurality of first pipe ejector arms pivot to lift said at least one pipe and to form a slope for rolling said at least one pipe on said plurality of first pipe ejector arms;

a plurality of second pipe ejector arms for moving said at least one pipe from said pipe arm in a second lateral direction different from said first lateral direction with respect to said pipe arm, wherein said plurality of second pipe ejector arms pivot to lift said at least one pipe and to form a slope for rolling said at least one pipe on said plurality of second pipe ejector arms;

a first torsional rod in connection with said pipe arm on a first side of said pipe arm, wherein said plurality of first pipe ejector arms are connected to said first torsional rod, wherein said first torsional rod pivots the plurality of first pipe ejector arms; and

a second torsional rod in connection with said pipe arm on a second side of said pipe arm opposite said first side, wherein said plurality of second pipe ejector arms are connected to said second torsional rod, wherein said second torsional rod pivots the plurality of second pipe ejector arms, wherein the plurality of the first pipe ejector arms comprise a first upper edge extending the distance between the receptacle and the first torsional rod, wherein the at least one pipe rolls on top of the first upper edge the distance between the receptacle and the first torsional rod, wherein the plurality of the second pipe ejector arms comprise a second upper edge extending the distance between the receptacle and the second torsional rod, and wherein the at least one pipe rolls on top of the second upper edge the distance between the receptacle and the second torsional rod.

2. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 1 , wherein said second lateral direction is opposite to said first lateral direction.

3. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a first hydraulic actuator operatively connected to said first torsional rod and a second hydraulic actuator operatively connected to said second torsional rod.

4. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the first and second upper edges are generally straight.

5. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the first torsional rod moves with the pipe arm, and wherein the second torsional rod moves with the pipe arm.

6. A pipe ejection mechanism for ejecting pipes, comprising:

a movable pipe arm;

at least one receptacle on said pipe arm operable for receiving at least one pipe;

a plurality of first pipe ejector arms;

a plurality of second pipe ejector arms;

a first torsion bar positioned adjacent the movable pipe arm, wherein the first torsion bar moves with the movable pipe arm, wherein the first torsion bar pivots the plurality of first pipe ejector arms, wherein the plurality of first pipe ejector arms extend a distance between the at least one receptacle and the first torsion bar, and wherein the at least one pipe rolls on top of the plurality of first pipe ejector arms the distance between the at least one receptacle and the first torsion bar;

a second torsion bar positioned adjacent the movable pipe arm, wherein the second torsion bar moves with the movable pipe arm, wherein the second torsion bar pivots the plurality of second pipe ejector arms, and wherein the ejection control selectively ejects the least one pipe from the pipe arm in a second lateral direction different from said first lateral direction with respect to the pipe arm; and

an ejection control operably mounted to said pipe arm for selectively ejecting said at least one pipe from said pipe arm in a first lateral direction with respect to said pipe arm.

7. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 6 , wherein said second lateral direction is opposite to said first lateral direction.

8. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 6 , wherein said ejection control further comprises a first hydraulic actuator operatively connected to said first rotational plate, and a second hydraulic actuator operatively connected to said second rotational plate, such that actuation of said first hydraulic operator results in said ejecting of said at least one pipe from said pipe arm in said first lateral direction with respect to said pipe arm and actuation of said second hydraulic actuator results in said ejecting of said at least one pipe from said pipe arm in said second lateral direction with respect to said pipe arm.

9. The pipe ejection mechanism of claim 6 , wherein said pipe arm is mounted to be movable between an upright position and a lowered position.
