Abstract

A completion system and method adapted for use in wells having long lateral boreholes includes a mast assembly, a pipe handling mechanism, a pipe arm, a pipe tub, a pump/pit combination skid, a rig carrier, and a control system. The mast assembly can extend in a generally vertical direction, e.g., perpendicular to the rig carrier and/or the earth's surface, such that the rig can be placed directly adjacent to a wellbore, and the top drive or a similar drive system can be engaged with and move along the mast while remaining above the wellbore.

Claims (15)

1. A support structure for use with a mobile rig, the support structure comprising:

a mast portion, wherein the mast portion comprises a first beam extending vertically along a first side of the mast portion and a second beam extending vertically along a second side of the mast portion for guiding a drive mechanism and resisting a force imparted by the drive mechanism;

a base portion, wherein the base portion defines a lateral boundary of an empty space for accommodating well control equipment, such that the mast portion extends essentially vertical above the base portion and is aligned with an axis of a wellbore; and

a drive mechanism support frame, wherein the drive mechanism support frame comprises a first guide frame and a second guide frame, wherein the first guide frame comprises at least two parallel guide plates with at least two rollers extending therebetween, wherein the second guide frame comprises at least two parallel guide plates with at least two rollers extending therebetween, wherein the at least two rollers of the first guide frame contact the first beam, and wherein the at least two rollers of the second guide frame contact the second beam.

2. The support structure of claim 1 , further comprising a structure for retaining a pipe tong in connection with the mast portion and for permitting movement of the pipe tong vertically along the mast portion.

3. The support structure of claim 2 , wherein the structure for retaining the pipe tong comprises a first rail connected to a first side of the mast portion for retaining a first side of the pipe tong in position, a second rail connected to a second side of the mast portion for retaining a second side of the pipe tong in position, wherein the pipe tong is movable vertically along the first and second rails, wherein the pipe tong is lockable in position along the first and second rails.

4. The support structure of claim 2 , wherein the structure for retaining the pipe tong comprises a first side member for engaging a first side of the pipe tong, a second side member for engaging a second side of the pipe tong, wherein the pipe tong is vertically movable along the first side member and the second side member, and wherein the pipe tong is horizontally movable into and from a space within the mast portion.

5. The support structure of claim 1 , wherein the mast portion and the base portion are pivotally connected, wherein the base portion is narrower than the mast portion, wherein a lower end of the mast portion comprises a plurality of diagonal beams, wherein the plurality of diagonal beams define a progressively narrower width of the mast portion in the downward direction, and wherein the plurality of diagonal beams further defines an upper boundary of the empty space underneath the lower end of the mast portion for accommodating a blowout preventer, a snubbing assembly, or combinations thereof.

6. A pivoting mast assembly for a mobile drill rig, the pivoting mast assembly comprising a support structure for retaining a pipe tong assembly in connection with the pivoting mast assembly and for permitting movement of the pipe tong assembly vertically along the pivoting mast assembly, wherein the support structure for retaining the pipe tong assembly comprises a first elongate bar connected to a first side of the pivoting mast assembly and a second elongate bar connected to a second side of the pivoting mast assembly, wherein the first and the second elongate bars are adapted for guiding vertical motion of the pipe tong assembly along the pivoting mast assembly, wherein the pipe tong assembly is lockable in position along the first and the second elongate bars, wherein the first and the second elongate bars comprise a plurality of cavities or protrusions along the length thereof, wherein the plurality of cavities or protrusions are adapted for locking the pipe tong assembly in position along the first and the second elongate bars.

7. The pivoting mast assembly of claim 6 , wherein the support structure for retaining the pipe tong assembly comprises a first side member for engaging a first side of the pipe tong assembly, a second side member for engaging a second side of the pipe tong assembly, wherein the first side member extends vertically along a first side of the pivoting mast assembly, wherein the second side member extends vertically along a second side of the pivoting mast assembly, wherein the pipe tong is vertically movable along the first side member and the second side member, wherein the support structure further permits movement of the pipe tong assembly horizontally along the pivoting mast assembly.

8. A support structure for use with a mobile rig, the support structure comprising:

a mast portion comprising a first beam extending vertically along a first side of the mast portion and a second beam extending vertically along a second side of the mast portion adapted for guiding a drive mechanism and resisting a force imparted by the drive mechanism, wherein the first beam comprises a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface of the first beam are adapted for guiding the vertical motion of the drive mechanism, wherein the second beam comprises a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first surface and the second surface of the second beam are adapted for guiding the vertical motion of the drive mechanism;

a base portion, wherein the base portion defines an empty space for accommodating well control equipment, such that the mast portion extends essentially vertical above the base portion and is aligned with an axis of a wellbore; and

a drive mechanism support frame adapted to detachably connect with and support a drive mechanism, wherein the drive mechanism support frame comprises a first guide frame and a second guide frame, wherein the first guide frame comprises at least two parallel guide plates adapted for positioning about the first beam, wherein the second guide frame comprises at least two parallel guide plates adapted for positioning about the second beam.

9. The support structure of claim 8 , wherein each of the first and second beams further comprise a side surface adjacent to the first surface and the second surface, wherein the side surfaces face each other.
