Abstract

A connector for use underwater or in a wet or severe environment comprises first and second connector parts adapted to be interengaged to establish an electrical connection. The first connector part has at least one pin, and the second connector part has at least one electrical contact for engagement by the pin when the connector parts are interengaged. The pin comprises an axially extending electrically conductive portion and an axially extending electrically insulating sleeve around said conductive portion, and the pin is supported by and projects axially forwardly from a support whereby its insulating sleeve is exposed along a longitudinally extending portion thereof to ambient conditions when the connector parts are disengaged. The connector part has a protective rigid metal sleeve member arranged to extend at least partly along the first portion of the insulating sleeve and at least partly along the second portion thereof.

Claims (22)

1. A connector for use underwater or in a wet or severe environment, comprising first and second connector parts adapted to be interengaged to establish an electrical connection, the first connector part having at least one pin, and the second connector part having at least one electrical contact for engagement by the pin when the connector parts are interengaged, the pin comprising an axially extending electrically conductive portion and an axially extending electrically insulating sleeve around said conductive portion, and the pin being supported by and projecting axially forwardly from a support whereby its insulating sleeve is exposed along a longitudinally extending portion thereof to ambient conditions when the connector parts are disengaged, and the first connector part having protective means to protect a portion of the insulating sleeve forwardly of and adjacent to the support at least when the connector parts are disengaged, wherein the protected portion of the insulating sleeve is protected by sealing means which engages the pin to prevent exposure of said protected portion of the insulating sleeve to ambient conditions, and wherein an insulating medium is disposed rearwardly of the sealing means.

2. A connector as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the insulating medium is a compliant material.

3. A connector as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the insulating medium is an insulating fluid.

4. A connector as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the insulating fluid is an oil.

5. A connector as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the sealing means is provided by an elastomeric membrane.

6. A connector as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the elastomeric membrane extends in a radially outward direction from where the sealing means engages the pin and an axially rearward direction towards the support.

7. A connector as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the protected portion of the insulating sleeve comprises a conically shaped section and an axially cylindrical section extending forwardly from the conical section.

8. A connector as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the conically shaped section is in contact with the insulating medium.

9. A connector as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the axially cylindrical section is in contact with the insulating medium.

10. A connector for use underwater or in a wet or severe environment, comprising first and second connector parts adapted to be interengaged to establish an electrical connection,

the first connector part having at least one pin, and the second connector part having at least one electrical contact for engagement by the pin when the connector parts are interengaged,

the pin comprising an axially extending electrically conductive portion and an axially extending electrically insulating sleeve around said conductive portion, and the pin being supported by and projecting axially forwardly from a support whereby its insulating sleeve is exposed along a longitudinally extending portion thereof to ambient conditions when the connector parts are disengaged, the pin having a wider diameter portion where it is carried by the support and a narrower diameter portion extending forwardly from the support, and

the first connector part having protective means to protect a portion of the insulating sleeve forwardly of and adjacent to the support at least when the connector parts are disengaged, the protective means comprising a rigid supporting portion that abuts against an inner wall of a housing of the first connector part,

wherein the protected portion of the insulating sleeve is protected by sealing means which engages the pin to prevent exposure of said protected portion to ambient conditions, and

the sealing means comprising at least one O-ring seal engaging the narrower diameter portion of the pin, and

wherein the rigid supporting portion is sealingly connected to the housing by one or more resilient outer O-ring seals.

11. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the sealing means engages the insulating sleeve of the pin.

12. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the protected portion of the insulating sleeve comprises a conically shaped section adjacent to the support and an axially cylindrical section extending forwardly from the conical section.

13. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the protective means of the first connector part is integrally formed with the support.

14. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the protective means of the first connector part is an integrally formed part of a housing of the first connector part.

15. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the pin has a wider diameter portion where it is carried by the support and a narrower diameter portion extending forwardly from the support.

16. A connector as claimed in claim 10 , comprising an elastomeric membrane which provides the sealing means engaging the pin, the elastomeric membrane defining a wall of a chamber containing the insulating medium.
