Abstract

A surgical guide to be placed in a patient's mouth. The patient's mouth is scanned to obtain surgical-region scan data at a region where an implant is to be located. The patient's mouth is also scanned in the opened position to acquire dental conditions opposite from the surgical region so as to obtain opposing-condition scan data. A virtual model is developed using the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data. Using the virtual model, a surgical plan is developed that includes the location of the implant to be installed in the patient. A virtual surgical guide is also developed based on the surgical plan. The dimensions of instrumentation to be used with the surgical guide are checked to ensure they will fit within the mouth by use of the opposing-condition scan data. After checking, final surgical-guide manufacturing information is obtained for manufacturing the surgical guide.

Claims (41)

1. A method of developing manufacturing information for a surgical guide to be placed in a patient's mouth, comprising:

receiving surgical-region scan data of a surgical region at which at least one dental implant is to be located;

receiving dental conditions opposite from the surgical region so as to obtain opposing-condition scan data;

developing a virtual model of the patient's mouth using the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data;

by use of the virtual model, checking the dimensions of instrumentation to be used with the surgical guide to ensure the instrumentation will fit within the patient's mouth when installing the at least one implant; and

after the checking, obtaining final surgical-guide manufacturing information based on the virtual model.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the instrumentation includes a plurality of drill bits that are illustrated in the virtual model to ensure proper fitting.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the instrumentation includes a combination of an implant mount that is attached to the at least one dental implant, the combination being illustrated in the virtual model to ensure proper fitting.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the instrumentation so that altered instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising developing a virtual surgical guide based on the location of the at least one dental implant and the final surgical-guide manufacturing information.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the location of the at least one dental implant and altering the virtual surgical guide so that the instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising developing, with the use of the virtual model, a surgical plan that includes the location of the at least one dental implant to be placed in the patient's mouth.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the surgical plan so that the instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the opposing-condition scan data provides spatial constraint data including an available dimension measured from the surgical region of the patient's top or bottom jaw to an opposing region of the other of the patient's top or bottom jaw.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising altering the surgical plan by altering the instrumentation so that altered instrumentation has a dimension that is less than the available dimension.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying the virtual model on a display.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising displaying the instrumentation within the virtual model on the display.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data is obtained using a CT-scanner.

14. A method of developing manufacturing information for a surgical guide to be placed in a patient's mouth, comprising:

developing, by use of a computer system, a virtual model of the patient's mouth incorporating surgical-region scan data of a surgical region of the patient's mouth at which at least one dental implant is to be located and opposing-condition scan data from a scan of the patient's mouth in an opened position, the opposing-condition scan data including dental conditions opposite the surgical region;

developing, with the use of the virtual model, a surgical plan that includes the location of the at least one dental implant to be placed in the patient's mouth;

developing a virtual surgical guide based on the location of the at least one dental implant and the surgical-region scan data;

checking the dimensions of instrumentation to be used with the surgical guide to ensure the instrumentation will fit within the patient's mouth when installing the at least one dental implant; and

after the checking step, obtaining final surgical-guide manufacturing information based on the virtual model, the final surgical-guide manufacturing information being for use in manufacturing the surgical guide.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the instrumentation includes a plurality of drill bits that are illustrated in the virtual model to ensure proper fitting.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the instrumentation includes a combination of an implant mount that is attached to the at least one dental implant, the combination being illustrated in the virtual model to ensure proper fitting.

17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the instrumentation so that altered instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the location of the at least one dental implant and altering the virtual surgical guide so that the altered instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

19. The method of claim 14 , further comprising, in response to the checking of the dimensions of the instrumentation indicating an unworkable condition, altering the surgical plan so that the altered instrumentation fits within the patient's mouth.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein altering the surgical plan includes moving the location of the at least one dental implant and altering the virtual surgical guide in a region of the at least one dental implant.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein altering the surgical plan includes altering the size of the at least one dental implant.

22. The method of claim 19 , wherein the at least one dental implant is a plurality of dental implants, the altering the surgical plan including removing one of the plurality of dental implants and altering the virtual surgical guide in a region of the removed dental implant.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein the virtual surgical guide includes at least one opening designed for receiving the at least one dental implant.

24. The method of claim 14 , wherein the dental conditions opposite the surgical region include natural teeth or gingival tissue.

25. The method of claim 14 , further comprising displaying the virtual model on a display.

26. The method of claim 14 , further comprising displaying the instrumentation on a display.

27. The method of claim 14 , wherein one of the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data is obtained using a CT-scanner.

28. A method of pre-operative visualization in a patient's mouth, comprising:

receiving a scan of a patient's mouth in an opened position to acquire dental conditions opposite from a surgical region so as to obtain opposing-condition scan data; and

using a virtual model of the surgical region of the patient's mouth and the opposing-condition scan data to determine whether instrumentation to be used with a surgical guide in an actual surgery will fit within the patient's mouth when installing at least one dental implant the virtual model being displayed on a display, the instrumentation including at least one of the group consisting of: a drill bit, a wrench, a driver, a dental drill, a starter drill, a tissue punch, a counter sink, a bone profiler, a guide-tube tool, an implant holder, an implant mount, and a surgical hand piece.
