Abstract

A method begins by a dispersed storage (DS) processing module receiving an access request for a customized preview of multi-media content from an accessing device that possesses first sub-sets of encoded data slices, wherein the multi-media content is segmented into data segments, wherein each data segment is encoded to produce a plurality of sets of encoded data slices and wherein the plurality of sets of encoded data slices includes the plurality of first sub-sets of encoded data slices and a plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data. The method continues with the DS processing module identifying a set of data segments corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content. The method continues with the DS processing module sending, to the accessing device, at least one encoded data slice of a second sub-set of encoded data slices that corresponds to a data segment of the set of data segments.

Claims (63)

1. A method comprises:

receiving an access request for a customized preview of multi-media content from an accessing device, wherein the accessing device possesses a plurality of first sub-sets of encoded data slices, wherein the multi-media content is divided into a plurality of data segments, wherein the plurality of data segments are encoded utilizing a dispersed storage error coding function to produce a plurality of sets of encoded data slices, wherein the plurality of sets of encoded data slices includes the plurality of first sub-sets of encoded data slices and a plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices and wherein a first sub-set of encoded data slices of the plurality of first sub-set of encoded data slices includes less than a decode threshold number of encoded data slices;

identifying a set of data segments of the plurality of data segments corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content based on identity information of the accessing device; and

sending, to the accessing device, at least one encoded data slice of one of the plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices that corresponds to a data segment of the set of data segments.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the access request comprises at least one of:

a multi-media content identifier (ID) corresponding to the multi-media content;

a preview ID corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content;

a preview descriptor corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content;

data segment IDs of the set of data segments; and

one more slice names of the at least one encoded data slice.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identity information comprises one or more of:

identity of the accessing device;

identity of a style of previewing multi-media content;

a request for the customized preview; and

preview preference information.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending the at least one encoded data slice to the accessing device further comprises at least one of:

generating viewing information and embedding the viewing information with the at least one encoded data slice;

outputting the at least one encoded data slice to the accessing device when receiving a play request from the accessing device; and

outputting the at least one encoded data slice to the access device in accordance with a multi-media streaming approach.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

receiving a second access request for a second customized preview of the multi-media content from a second accessing device;

identifying a second set of data segments of the plurality of data segments corresponding to the second customized preview of the multi-media content based on second identity information of the second accessing device; and

sending, to the second accessing device, at least one encoded data slice of one of the plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices that corresponds to a data segment of the second set of data segments.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the set of data segments comprises:

determining the customized preview based on the identity information; and

identifying the set of data slices corresponding to the customized preview.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the set of data segments comprises:

interpreting the identity information to determine preview preference information;

generating the customized preview based on the preview preference information; and

identifying the set of data slices corresponding to the customized preview.

8. A dispersed storage (DS) module comprises:

a first module, when operable within a computing device, causes the computing device to:

receive an access request for a customized preview of multi-media content from an accessing device, wherein the accessing device possesses a plurality of first sub-sets of encoded data slices, wherein the multi-media content is divided into a plurality of data segments, wherein the plurality of data segments are encoded utilizing a dispersed storage error coding function to produce a plurality of sets of encoded data slices, wherein the plurality of sets of encoded data slices includes the plurality of first sub-sets of encoded data slices and a plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices and wherein a first sub-set of encoded data slices of the plurality of first sub-set of encoded data slices includes less than a decode threshold number of encoded data slices;

a second module, when operable within the computing device, causes the computing device to:

identify a set of data segments of the plurality of data segments corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content based on identity information of the accessing device; and

a third module, when operable within the computing device, causes the computing device to:

send, to the accessing device, at least one encoded data slice of one of the plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices that corresponds to a data segment of the set of data segments.

9. The DS module of claim 8 , wherein the access request comprises at least one of:

a multi-media content identifier (ID) corresponding to the multi-media content;

a preview ID corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content;

a preview descriptor corresponding to the customized preview of the multi-media content;

data segment IDs of the set of data segments; and

one more slice names of the at least one encoded data slice.

10. The DS module of claim 8 , wherein the identity information comprises one or more of:

identity of the accessing device;

identity of a style of previewing multi-media content;

a request for the customized preview; and

preview preference information.

11. The DS module of claim 8 , wherein the third module is further operable to send the at least one encoded data slice to the accessing device further by at least one of:

generating viewing information and embedding the viewing information with the at least one encoded data slice;

outputting the at least one encoded data slice to the accessing device when receiving a play request from the accessing device; and

outputting the at least one encoded data slice to the access device in accordance with a multi-media streaming approach.

12. The DS module of claim 8 further comprises:

the first module is further operable to receive a second access request for a second customized preview of the multi-media content from a second accessing device;

the second module is further operable to identify a second set of data segments of the plurality of data segments corresponding to the second customized preview of the multi-media content based on second identity information of the second accessing device; and

the third module is further operable to send, to the second accessing device, at least one encoded data slice of one of the plurality of second sub-sets of encoded data slices that corresponds to a data segment of the second set of data segments.

13. The DS module of claim 8 , wherein the second module is further operable to identify the set of data segments by:

determining the customized preview based on the identity information; and

identifying the set of data slices corresponding to the customized preview.

14. The DS module of claim 8 , wherein the second module is further operable to identify the set of data segments by:
