Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for displaying media assets on user equipment. The first media asset that the user desires to view is displayed on a display screen of the user equipment and its associated content characteristic is identified. Upon receiving a request to access a different media asset, a search is initiated to identify a second media asset that matches the identified content characteristic of the displayed media asset. After such a media asset has been identified, it is determined whether the content source that provides such an identified media asset includes an advertisement at the time the user request is received. If the content source of the identified media asset does not include an advertisement at the time of the user request, then the identified media asset is displayed on the display screen of the user equipment.

Claims (44)

1 . A method for displaying media assets on user equipment, the method comprising:

causing a first media asset received from a first content source associated with a first content characteristic to be displayed on the user equipment;

receiving a request to access another media asset at a given time;

in response to receiving the request, searching for a second media asset that matches the first content characteristic;

determining whether a second content source that provides the second media asset includes an advertisement at the given time; and

causing the second media asset to be displayed at the user equipment in response to determining that the second content source does not include an advertisement.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising determining whether the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising displaying a message to indicate that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement in response to determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

4 . The method of claim 2 further comprising displaying a visual indicator upon determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

5 . The method of claim 2 further comprising accessing the first content source upon determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to determining that the second content source includes an advertisement at the given time, searching for a third media asset that matches the first content characteristic;

determining whether a third content source that provides the third media asset includes an advertisement at the given time; and

causing the third media asset to be displayed at the user equipment in response to determining that the third content source does not include an advertisement.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein searching for a second media asset that matches the first content characteristic further comprises determining that a genre of the second media asset matches a genre of the first media asset.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the second content source includes an advertisement further comprises processing closed captioning information or information provided by the second content source to identify data indicative of an advertisement.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein searching for a second media asset further comprises searching a second content source that has been designated as a favorite content source.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the first content source no longer includes an advertisement;

determining whether the first media content is being displayed; and

pausing playback of the first media content in response to determining that the first media content is not being displayed and that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

11 . A system for displaying media assets, the system comprising:

display screen, user input interface, and control circuitry coupled to the display screen and the user input interface, the control circuitry configured to:

cause a first media asset received from a first content source associated with a first content characteristic to be displayed on the display screen;

receive a request to access another media asset at a given time;

in response to receiving the request, search for a second media asset that matches the first content characteristic;

determine whether a second content source that provides the second media asset includes an advertisement at the given time; and

cause the second media asset to be displayed at the display screen in response to determining that the second content source does not include an advertisement.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine whether the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to display a message at the display screen to indicate that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement in response to determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to display at the display screen a visual indicator upon determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to access the first content source upon determining that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

search for a third media asset that matches the first content characteristic in response to determining that the second content source includes an advertisement at the given time;

determine whether a third content source that provides the third media asset includes an advertisement at the given time; and

cause the third media asset to be displayed at the display screen in response to determining that the third content source does not include an advertisement.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein searching for a second media asset that matches the first content characteristic further comprises determining that a genre of the second media asset matches a genre of the first media asset.

18 . The system of claim 11 , wherein determining whether the second content source includes an advertisement further comprises processing closed captioning information or information provided by the second content source to identify data indicative of an advertisement.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein searching for a second media asset further comprises searching a second content source that has been designated as a favorite content source.

20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine whether the first content source no longer includes an advertisement;

determine whether the first media content is being displayed; and

pause playback of the first media content in response to determining that the first media content is not being displayed and that the first content source no longer includes an advertisement.
