Abstract

Described herein are improved configurations for resonator for wireless power transfer that includes a magnetic material having at least one hollow section, and at least one electrical conductor wrapped around the magnetic material. The cavity of the magnetic material may be used for lossy elements such as circuit boards or electronics with reduced perturbations on the properties of the resonator compared to if the lossy elements were outside of the magnetic material next to the resonator.

Claims (32)

1. A resonator structure for wireless energy transfer, comprising:

a core comprised of magnetic material, the core having a hollow space therein;

a resonator coil having at least one electrical conductor that is wrapped around the magnetic material forming a plurality of loops around the core; and

power and control circuitry coupled to the resonator coil and positioned at least partially in the hollow space of the core.

2. The resonator structure of claim 1 , wherein the hollow space is lined with one or more layers of an electrically insulating material.

3. The resonator structure of claim 1 , wherein the core comprises an opening allowing access to the hollow space.

4. The resonator structure of claim 1 , wherein the resonator structure is integrated into an electronic device.

5. The resonator structure of claim 1 , further comprising additional circuitry different from the power and control circuitry, positioned at least partially within the hollow space.

6. The resonator structure of claim 5 , further comprising a substrate, wherein the substrate is a metal box having a hollow space and wherein the core comprises multiple pieces of magnetic material that are tiled around the metal box, the hollow space of the metal box being the hollow space of the core.

7. A resonator structure for wireless energy transfer, comprising:

a core comprised of magnetic material, the core having a hollow space therein and at least one opening;

a resonator coil having at least one electrical conductor that is wrapped around the magnetic material forming a plurality of loops around the core; and

power and control circuitry coupled to the resonator coil.

8. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the magnetic material substantially surrounds the hollow space, the substantially surrounding magnetic material defining the hollow space.

9. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the power and control circuitry is coupled to the resonator coil through the at least one opening.

10. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the power and control circuitry is at least partially enclosed within the hollow space.

11. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the core comprises multiple pieces of magnetic material.

12. The resonator structure of claim 7 , further comprising a substrate, wherein the magnetic material at least partially covers the substrate.

13. The resonator structure of claim 11 , further comprising a substrate, wherein at least one of the multiple pieces of magnetic material at least partially covers the substrate.

14. The resonator structure of claim 13 , wherein the substrate is a metal box having a hollow space, and wherein the multiple pieces of magnetic material are tiled around the metal box, the hollow space of the metal box corresponding to the hollow space of the core.

15. The resonator structure of claim 13 , wherein the substrate is metallic.

16. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the hollow space is lined with one or more layers of an electrically conductive material.

17. The resonator structure of claim 7 , wherein the resonator structure has a quality factor Q>100.

18. A resonator structure for wireless energy transfer, comprising:

a core comprised of magnetic material, the core having a hollow space therein;

a resonator coil having at least one electrical conductor that is wrapped around the magnetic material forming a plurality of loops around the core; and

a lossy object positioned within the hollow space.

19. A device for wireless energy transfer, comprising:

a core comprised of magnetic material, the core having a hollow space therein;

a resonator coil having at least one electrical conductor that is wrapped around the magnetic material, forming a plurality of spaced-apart loops around the core; and

electronics implementing some functionality of the device,

wherein the electronics are at least partially positioned inside the hollow space.
