Abstract

The present disclosure relates to devices and methods for creating channels within bone. One method for treating bone generally includes traversing an elongated member through cancellous bone of a vertebral body along a first generally non-linear path and then retracting the elongated member, thereby leaving a generally non-linear channel. The elongated member then is traversed through the cancellous bone along a second generally non-linear path, which second path does not completely coincide with the first path and then retracted along the second generally nonlinear path, thereby leaving a second generally non-linear channel. Optionally, bone filler material is deployed into the channels.

Claims (29)

1. A method for creating channels within cancellous bone of a vertebral body, comprising:

advancing an elongated member through cancellous bone of a vertebral body along a first generally non-linear path;

retracting the elongated member along the first generally non-linear path, thereby leaving a first generally non-linear channel;

injecting bone filler material into the first generally non-linear channel as the elongated member is being retracted;

advancing the elongated member through the cancellous bone of the vertebral body along a second generally non-linear path, which second path does not completely coincide with the first path; and

retracting the elongated member along the second generally nonlinear path, thereby leaving a second generally non-linear channel.

2. The method of claim 1 in which first and second generally non-linear paths are generally arcuate.

3. The method of claim 1 in which the first and second generally non-linear channels are generally arcuate.

4. The method of claim 1 further including repeating the traversing and retracting steps until the desired number of channels are created in the cancellous bone.

5. The method of claim 1 in which the elongated member changes from a first generally linear configuration to a second generally arcuate configuration as the elongated member traverses through the cancellous bone.

6. The method of claim 5 in which the generally arcuate configuration of the elongated member is a generally looped configuration.

7. The method of claim 5 including traversing a desired portion of the elongated member in the arcuate configuration through the cancellous bone.

8. The method of claim 1 in which the generally elongated member is comprised of a shape memory material.

9. A method of treating a vertebral body, comprising:

positioning at least a distal end portion of a cannula within a vertebral body, the distal end portion including an opening therein, and an elongated member located within the cannula;

deploying at least a distal end portion of the elongated member out of the opening in the distal end portion of the cannula and through bone structure of the vertebral body along a first path to form a first generally non-linear channel in the bone structure;

retracting the distal end portion of the elongated member into the cannula;

injecting bone filler material into the first generally non-linear channel as the distal end portion of the elongated member is being retracted into the cannula; and

redeploying at least the distal end portion of the elongated member out of the opening in the distal end portion of the cannula and through bone structure of the vertebral body in a second path to form a second generally non-linear channel, wherein the second channel does not completely coincide with the first channel.

10. The method of claim 9 in which the first and second paths are generally arcuate.

11. The method of claim 9 in which the first and second generally non-linear channels are generally arcuate.

12. The method of claim 9 further including repeating the deploying and retracting steps until the desired number of channels are created in the bone structure.

The method of claim 9 in which at least the distal end portion of the elongated member has a first generally linear configuration when within the cannula and changes to a second generally arcuate configuration as the elongated member is deployed out of the opening in the distal end portion of the cannula.

14. The method of claim 13 in which second generally arcuate configuration of the elongated member is a generally looped configuration.

15. The method of claim 14 in which the generally looped configuration includes a plurality of loops.

16. The method of claim 13 in which a desired portion of the elongate member in the second generally arcuate configuration is deployed out of the opening in the distal end portion of the cannula.

17. The method of claim 9 further including repositioning the cannula within the vertebral body prior to redeploying at least a distal portion of the elongated member.

18. The method of claim 17 in which the cannula has a longitudinal axis and the repositioning includes rotating the cannula about the longitudinal axis and/or moving the cannula axially along the longitudinal axis.

19. The method of claim 9 in which the generally elongated member is comprised of a shape memory material.
