Abstract

A system for ablating tissue includes a reusable control unit including a processor monitoring and controlling ablation and a control interface receiving input to and output from the processor in combination with a disposable procedure set releasably connectable to the control unit to couple to the control interface for communication with the processor.

Claims (21)

1. A device for thermal ablation, comprising:

a sensor arrangement sensing data corresponding to an operation condition of the device;

a reusable console;

a disposable cartridge removably attached to the console, the cartridge including a fluid path through which ablation fluid flows and a heater for heating the ablation fluid to a target temperature;

a control unit connected to the sensor arrangement, the control unit controlling operation of the heater in response to data from the sensor arrangement to control operation of the device to a safe mode to prevent injury to a patient when data from the sensor arrangement is outside a predetermined range; and

a hardware safety subsystem connected to the sensor arrangement and providing a redundant fail safe operation to place the device in the safe mode in the event of a failure of the control unit to do so when data from the sensor arrangement is outside the predetermined range.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the control unit includes a first microcontroller and the disposable cartridge has a second microcontroller operating independently of the first microcontroller, the second microcontroller receiving the data from the sensor arrangement and communicating with the control unit to control operation of the device to the safe mode.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement includes a first sensor detecting a position of a valve controlling a flow path of fluid through the thermal ablation device.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement includes a second sensor detecting a temperature of the ablation fluid and generating a second sensor signal.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the sensor arrangement includes a third sensor detecting a pressure of the ablation fluid and generating a third sensor signal.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement includes a fourth sensor detecting an amount of fluid circulating through the thermal ablation device and generating a fourth sensor signal.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the disposable cartridge further comprises a safety monitor circuit monitoring the second and third sensor signals.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the safety monitor circuit suspends ablation when at least one of the second and third sensor signals falls outside of the predetermined range.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the disposable cartridge includes an indicator indicating whether the cartridge has been used previously and wherein the control unit prevents operation of the thermal ablation device when it detects that the cartridge installed in the device has been used previously.

10. The device of claim 6 , wherein the control unit determines that an undesirable level of ablation fluid has been absorbed by the patient based on the fourth sensor signal.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the disposable cartridge includes a memory unit.

12. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a pump impeller provided in the disposable cartridge, the pump impeller being operated by a motor located within the reusable console and coupled to the impeller via a magnetic coupling to maintain a desired pressure of the ablation fluid.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the heater is controlled by a heating controller circuit.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a patient sheath releasably connected to the disposable cartridge, the patient sheath including a sealing feature ensuring a fluid-tight connection within a cervical canal to prevent ablation fluid from entering the cervical canal.

15. The device of claim 14 , further comprising a sealing film covering an opening of a patient sheath lumen, the sealing film being punctured to permit coupling of the patient sheath to the disposable cartridge.

16. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a plunger controlled by the controller to add and remove fluid to maintain a desired fluid pressure.
