Abstract

A method, system, and computer program product for replication comprising exposing, via a virtualization layer, a storage entity; wherein the virtualization layer runs on a virtual machine and wherein the storage entity corresponds to a virtual disk, and splitting IO in a splitter, wherein the splitter runs in the virtualization layer and the splitting creates a copy of the IO sent to the virtual disk.

Claims (50)

1. A system for data replication, the system comprising:

a hypervisor having a virtualization layer; wherein the virtualization layer runs in the hypervisor; wherein the virtualization layer consumes storage;

a splitter running in the virtualization layer;

a storage entity corresponding to a virtual disk; wherein the virtual disk is exposed by the virtualization layer to one or more virtual machines running in the hypervisor; wherein the virtual disk is mapped to a portion of the consumed storage; and

memory; one or more processors; computer-executable program logic, stored in one or more portions of the memory, wherein the computer-executable program logic, executed by the one or more processors to perform:

exposing, via the virtualization layer, the storage entity;

splitting IO in the splitter in the virtualization layer; wherein the splitting includes the splitter intercepting IO directed to the virtual disk and creating a copy of the IO sent to the virtual disk.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the computer logic is further configured for the execution of:

journaling IO from the splitter in a journal; the journal including do data and undo; wherein the do data is data to be applied to an image and wherein undo data is data to undo IOs that have been applied to the image;

providing access to any point in time access for the image by applying the do data or undo data to roll the image to another point in time.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the computer logic is further configured for the execution of:

sending the copy of the IO from the splitter to a data replication appliance.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein consistency groups use the splitter to send IO the data protection appliance running a consistency group; wherein there are one or more storage entities for each consistency group of the consistency groups.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the computer logic is further configured for the execution of:

quiescing IO to establish a consistent point in time;

taking a bookmark of the images for each of the consistency groups;

unquiescing the IO.

6. The system of claim 3 wherein the computer logic is further configured for the execution of:

providing to the data replication appliance access to the storage entity through communicating with a replication splitter.

7. A computer implemented method comprising:

exposing, via a virtualization layer, a storage entity; wherein the virtualization layer runs in a hypervisor; wherein the virtualization layer consumes storage; and wherein the storage entity corresponds to a virtual disk; wherein the virtual disk is exposed by the virtualization layer to one or more virtual machines running in the hypervisor; wherein the virtual disk is mapped to a portion of the consumed storage;

splitting IO in the splitter running in the virtualization layer; wherein the splitter runs in the virtualization layer and the splitting intercepts IO directed to the virtual disk and creates a copy of the IO sent to the virtual disk.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 7 wherein the storage entity is a VVOL and has a VASA control path.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 7 wherein the storage entity is a file in a network file system.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 7 further comprising:

sending the copy of the IO from the splitter to a data replication appliance.

11. The computer implemented method of claim 10 wherein consistency groups use the splitter to send IO the data protection appliance running a consistency group; wherein there are one or more storage entities for each consistency group of the consistency groups.

12. The computer implemented method of claim 7 further comprising:

journaling IO from the splitter in a journal; the journal including do data and undo; wherein the do data is data to be applied to an image and wherein undo data is data to undo IOs that have been applied to the image;

providing access to any point in time access for the image by applying the do data or undo data to roll the image to another point in time.

13. The computer implemented method of claim 12 wherein the journal contains metadata; wherein application of the metadata rolls the image to a point in time which is application consistent.

14. A computer program product for use in replication comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with computer executable program code for replication of data, the program code executed by one or more processors or on portions of one or more processors, the code configured for execution of:

exposing, via a virtualization layer, a storage entity; wherein the virtualization layer runs in a hypervisor; wherein the virtualization layer consumes storage; and wherein the storage entity corresponds to a virtual disk; wherein the virtual disk is exposed by the virtualization layer to one or more virtual machines running in the hypervisor; wherein the virtual disk is mapped to a portion of the consumed storage;

splitting IO in a splitter running in the virtualization layer; wherein the splitter runs in the virtualization layer and the splitting intercepts IO directed to the virtual disk and creates a copy of the IO sent to the virtual disk.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein the storage entity is a VVOL and has a VASA control path.

16. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein the storage entity is a file in a network file system.

17. The computer program product of claim 14 the code further configured for execution of:

sending the copy of the IO from the splitter to a data replication appliance.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 wherein consistency groups use the splitter to send IO the data protection appliance running a consistency group; wherein there are one or more storage entities for each consistency group of the consistency groups.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 the code further configured for execution of:

quiescing IO to establish a consistent point in time;

taking a bookmark of the images for each of the consistency groups;

unquiescing the IO.

20. The computer program product of claim 14 the code further configured for execution of:

journaling IO from the splitter in a journal; the journal including do data and undo; wherein the do data is data to be applied to an image and wherein undo data is data to undo IOs that have been applied to the image;

providing access to any point in time access for the image by applying the do data or undo data to roll the image to another point in time.

21. The computer program product of claim 20 wherein the journal contains metadata; wherein application of the metadata rolls the image to a point in time which is application consistent.

22. The computer program product of claim 20 the code further configured for execution of:

providing to the data replication appliance access to the storage entity through communicating with a replication splitter.
