Apparatus for promoting movement of nutrients to intervertebral space and method of use
View Patent ↗Devices and methods are disclosed for treating an intervertebral space. A device is provided that extends from the middle of at least one vertebral body to the disc space between two adjacent vertebrae. The device allows nutrients, such as bone marrow, blood, etc., to migrate from the vertebral body to the disc space to help promote fusion of the two adjacent vertebral bodies. The device can be tubular, perforated and can be made of an absorbent or wicking material that is able to promote the nutrients to travel through the apparatus.
1. A method for promoting fusion within a spine segment having a disc comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, and an outer side surface extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, comprising:
accessing an endplate of a vertebral body by creating an opening at the outer side surface of the disc and creating a path starting at the opening and extending to an endplate;
perforating the endplate of the vertebral body after creating a path starting at the opening;
providing an implant for treating the spine comprising a porous member configured to promote transfer of nutrients from the vertebral body to the disc;
inserting the implant into the path so that a first end of the implant is adjacent a cancellous bone portion of the vertebral body and a second end of the implant extends into the disc or an interbody spacer; and
placing the interbody spacer within a disc space between the endplate and an opposing end plate.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein access to the endplate is provided using a drill.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the drill is curved.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endplate faces a downward direction.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising placing a portion of the implant within the interbody spacer.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the interbody spacer is placed within the disc space before the implant.
7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the implant is placed within the disc space before the interbody spacer.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous member is made of a wicking material.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous member is absorbent material.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous member is flexible.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous member has a reduced configuration to allow implantation and an expanded configuration after implantation.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the porous member has first section optimized for wicking nutrients into the interior of the implant, and the second section optimized for delivery of the nutrients to the surrounding area of the intervertebral space.
13. A method for promoting fusion within a spine segment having a disc comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, and an outer side surface extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, comprising:
removing a portion of the outer side surface to create access to a disc space;
preparing the disc space for fusion;
creating a path that extends from the outer side surface of the disc through a hole in an endplate;
placing a device comprising a wicking material in the hole and in the path; and
placing an interbody device within the disc space.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the interbody device is placed into the disc space before the device is placed in the hole.
15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the interbody device is placed into the disc space after the device is placed in the hole.
16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the device extends into at least a portion of the interbody device.
17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hole is formed after the interbody device is placed within the disc space.
18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hole is formed before the interbody device is placed within the disc space.
19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the hole is created using a drilling jig.
20. A method for promoting fusion within a spine segment having a disc comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, and an outer side surface extending between the top surface and the bottom surface, comprising:
accessing an endplate of a vertebral body by creating an opening at a lateral position on the outer side surface of the disc and creating a path from the opening to an endplate;
perforating the endplate of the vertebral body;
providing an implant for treating the spine comprising a porous member configured to promote transfer of nutrients from the vertebral body to the disc;
inserting the implant into the path so that a first end of the implant is adjacent a cancellous bone portion of the vertebral body and a second end of the implant extends into the disc or an interbody spacer; and
placing the interbody spacer within a disc space between the endplate and an opposing end plate.
