Abstract

A luer connector including a housing with first end including a male luer tip and a second end. The connector further includes a rigid valve member having a first opened end and a second closed end and a retaining member configured to couple the valve member and the housing. The housing further includes a rigid conduit positioned within the housing and in fluid communication with the second end of the housing, the rigid conduit adapted to engage the first opened end of the valve member. The housing defines a first internal volume when the valve member is in a first position and a second, smaller volume when the valve member is in a second position.

Claims (17)

1. A medical connector comprising:

a housing with a central axis and a hollow bore having a male end with a male luer tip and a female end;

a valve member configured to at least partially extend into an interior space of the male luer tip, the valve member comprising a first opened end, a second end, an internal passageway, at least one opening near the second end of the valve member extending through the valve member and into the passageway;

an internal conduit having a fluid passageway and being in fluid communication with the female end; the internal conduit interfacing with the first opened end of the valve member and configured to minimize leakage of fluid out of a fluid path formed by the internal passageway of the valve member and the fluid passageway of the internal conduit, the internal conduit and the first opened end of the valve member being moveable relative to each other along the central axis such that at least a portion of the valve member and the internal conduit overlap, thereby producing a change in volume in an interior region of the housing as the valve member moves from a first position to a second position, the volume of the interior region being larger in the first position than in the second position;

a resilient member configured to couple the valve member and the housing and to bias the valve member against the male luer tip to close said medical connector, said resilient member circumferentially engaging the housing and configured to stretch as said medical connector moves from a closed position to an open position.

2. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the resilient member engages the housing at a position between the male luer and the first end of the housing.

3. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the resilient member engages the outside of the housing.

4. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the valve member is flexible.

5. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the valve member is rigid.

6. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the resilient member is integrated into the valve member.

7. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the struts are approximately planar.

8. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the passageway has a varying diameter between the first and second ends of the valve member.

9. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein the connector includes a shroud having a plurality of depressions.

10. The medical connector of claim 9 , wherein an outer surface of the housing adjacent the shroud is approximately co-planar with surfaces of the depressions.

11. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein a seal element forms the interface between the internal conduit and the opened first end of the valve member.

12. The medical connector of claim 11 , wherein the seal element is separately formed from the valve member.

13. The medical connector of claim 1 , wherein valve member overlaps the internal conduit on the outside of the internal conduit.
