Abstract

A method, device and system for stimulating visual tissue, typically in the retina or visual cortex, to achieve an artificial percept of light or image. The method includes providing stimulating electrodes suitable for placement in proximity to the visual tissue and generating a series of short-duration stimulation signals having a duration of less than about 0.5 milliseconds each. The short-duration stimulation signals are applied through the stimulating electrodes with varying frequencies that are substantially matched to a spiking range of frequencies of at least one ganglion cell for perceiving brightness or image.

Claims (15)

1. A visual prosthesis comprising:

a two dimensional array of stimulating electrodes suitable to be placed in proximity of visual neural tissue;

an implantable signal generator coupled to the two dimensional array of stimulating electrodes and generating stimulation signals adapted to mimic neural coding and configured to elicit multiple spike responses to multiple pulses with a single spike response in at least one visual neuron per stimulation pulse; and

a control circuit controlling the signal generator by controlling amplitude, frequency and duration of the stimulation signals adapted to elicit the perception of a visual image; wherein the frequency is greater than or equal to 1 Hertz and less than or equal to 250 Hertz.

2. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the stimulation signals are biphasic signals having a negative portion and a positive portion.

3. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the frequency corresponds to varying levels of brightness.

4. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the duration is less than 1 millisecond for each of the stimulation signals.

5. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the duration is less than 0.2 millisecond for each of the stimulation signals.

6. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the duration is less than 0.15 millisecond for each of the stimulation signals.

7. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one visual neuron is at least one retinal neuron.

8. The visual prosthesis according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one retinal neuron is at least one ganglion cell.

9. The visual prosthesis according to claim 8 , wherein the stimulation signals are adapted for stimulation of the at least one ganglion cell to the substantial exclusion of direct stimulation of the deeper retinal cells.

10. The visual prosthesis according to claim 8 , wherein varying frequencies are substantially matched to a spiking range of frequencies of the at least one ganglion cell for perceiving brightness.

11. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the frequency of the stimulation signals are greater than 10 Hz.

12. The visual prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the stimulation signals have a frequency of 1 to less than 40 Hertz and a duration of less than 0.5 milliseconds for each of the stimulation signals.
