Abstract

An enhanced email system incorporating mobile wireless communication devices includes program logic for efficiently managing (i.e., at least partially synchronizing) “messages sent” files in the mobile device and in a related message server. The exemplary program logic also more efficiently handles resending of previously sent email messages from the mobile wireless communication device (especially in the context of synchronized messages sent files) by sending to the message server only abbreviated unique message ID in the first instance. In this way, wireless bandwidth is conserved as is the device battery.

Claims (35)

1. A device comprising:

a processor configured to:

in response to receiving a resend command associated with a previously sent message, send to an associated server an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID associated with the previously sent message but not an entire message text, the abbreviated resend message request based upon at least unique message ID data and message identifying data for the previously sent message stored in a sent messages file.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to respond to a subsequent request from the associated server by sending to the associated server a further resend message request comprising the entire message text.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

send an entire sent message record to the associated server when a full copy of an associated sent message is not found at the associated server during a synchronization session.

4. A method comprising:

in response to receiving a resend command associated with a previously sent message, sending to an associated server from a device an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID associated with the previously sent message but not an entire message text, the abbreviated resend message request based upon at least unique message ID data and message identifying data for the previously sent message stored in a sent messages file.

5. The method as in claim 4 , further comprising:

in response to a subsequent request from the associated server, sending to the associated server from the device a further resend message request comprising the entire message text.

6. The method as in claim 4 , further comprising:

sending an entire sent message record to the associated server when a full copy of an associated sent message is not found at the associated server during a synchronization session.

7. A non-transitory computer program product, comprising a computer usable medium having a computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method comprising:

in response to receiving a resend command associated with a previously sent message, sending to an associated server from a device an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID associated with the previously sent message but not an entire message text, the abbreviated resend message request based upon at least unique message ID data and message identifying data for the previously sent message stored in a sent messages file.

8. The non-transitory computer program medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises:

in response to a subsequent request from the associated server, sending to the associated server from the device a further resend message request comprising the entire message text.

9. The non-transitory computer program medium of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises:

sending an entire sent message record to the associated server when a full copy of an associated sent message is not found at the associated server during a synchronization session.

10. A server comprising:

a processor configured to:

receive, from an associated device, an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID for a previously sent message that is to be resent; in response,

search unique message ID data, message identifying data and associated message text stored in a sent messages file, for a corresponding locally stored message using the unique message ID, the message identifying data and the associated message text stored for each of messages previously sent on behalf of the associated device; and, when found,

resend the corresponding locally stored message.

11. The server of claim 10 , wherein the processor is further configured to request the previously sent message from the associated device when the corresponding locally stored message is not found at the server.

12. A method comprising:

receiving, at a server from an associated device, an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID for a previously sent message that is to be resent; in response,

searching unique message ID data, message identifying data and associated message text stored in a sent messages file, for a corresponding locally stored message using the unique message ID, the message identifying data and the associated message text stored for each of messages previously sent on behalf of the associated device; and, when found,

resending the corresponding locally stored message.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising requesting the previously sent message from the associated device when the corresponding locally stored message is not found at the server.

14. A non-transitory computer program product, comprising a computer usable medium having a computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method for

receiving, at a server from an associated device, an abbreviated resend message request comprising a unique message ID for a previously sent message that is to be resent; in response,

searching unique message ID data message identifying data and associated message text stored in a sent messages file, for a corresponding locally stored message using the unique message ID, the message identifying data and the associated message text stored for each of messages previously sent on behalf of the associated device; and when found,

resending the corresponding locally stored message.

15. The non-transitory computer program medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises:

requesting the previously sent message from the associated device when the corresponding locally stored message is not found at the server.
