Abstract

In one example, the invention includes steps of: activating feeding and exiting motors of a dispensing device that cause corresponding rollers to rotate in forward direction, wherein the feeding motor is operatively connected to a displacement optical sensor, wherein the feeding and exiting rollers move a dispensing object; wherein an exit sensor generates a first signal, indicating that a leading edge of the dispensing object has activated the exit sensor, generating, by the stationary displacement optical sensor, a second signal, when, by passing at least one light beam over a surface of the portion of the dispensing object, the stationary displacement optical sensor determines that the portion of the dispensing object has traveled a pre-determined distance along the dispensing passage.

1) directing at least one light beam at the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period; and

2) one of:

i) registering, by the at least one displacement sensor, at least one light characteristic associated with the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period, after the at least one light beam interacts with the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period; or

ii) taking, by the at least one displacement sensor, a plurality of images of the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period;

d) determining a magnitude of a displacement of the strip of tickets along the dispensing passage based on the length of the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period;

e) generating at least one first indication by the at least one displacement sensor when the magnitude of the displacement is equal to or exceeds a pre-determined value;

f) separating, based on the at least one first indication, a ticket from the strip of tickets to form a remaining portion of the strip of tickets and the ticket;

g) moving the remaining portion of the strip of tickets back to the pre-set starting position; and

h) dispensing the ticket from the dispensing device.

generating, by at least one exit sensor positioned next to an exit end of the dispensing passage of the dispensing device, at least one second indication when the strip of tickets reaches the at least one exit sensor,

wherein, after the at least one displacement sensor receives the at least one second indication, the measuring, by the at least one displacement sensor, a beginning of the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light beam is a coherent light beam.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light beam is a non-coherent light beam.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

maintaining, by at least one tension mechanism, the dispensing object in a pre-determined state of tension so that the at least one passive wheel continuously contacts the strip of tickets when the strip of tickets moves along the dispensing passage of the dispensing device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of tickets are lottery tickets and wherein the ticket is a lottery ticket.

7. A device for dispensing, comprising:

a) at least one active feed roller that is designed to initiate a forward movement of a strip of tickets along a dispensing passage of the dispensing device, wherein the forward movement is initiated from a pre-set starting position and wherein the strip of tickets comprises a plurality of

b) at least one passive wheel, wherein the at least one passive wheel rotates as a result of only the forward movement of the strip of tickets as the at least one passive wheel continuously contacts the strip of tickets when the strip of tickets moves along the dispensing passage of the dispensing device from the pre-set starting position;

c) at least one displacement sensor is designed for remotely measuring a perimeter of a surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves,

wherein the surface of the at least one passive wheel is a surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves along the dispensing passage of the dispensing device from the pre-set starting position during a measuring time period,

wherein the remotely measuring of the perimeter of the surface of the at least one passive wheel is independent from characteristics of the at least one passive wheel, and

wherein the remotely measuring, by the at least one displacement sensor, is based, at least in part, on:

1) directing at least one light beam at the perimeter of the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period; and

2) one of:

i) registering, by the at least one displacement sensor, at least one light characteristic associated with the perimeter of the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period, after the at least one light beam interacts with the surface of the at least one passive wheel that has touched the strip of tickets as the strip of tickets moves, during the measuring time period; or
