Abstract

Provided is a personal traction device that includes a traction mechanism that is very comfortable underfoot, while providing excellent traction over slippery surfaces as well as excellent long-term wear.

Claims (23)

1 . A traction device for a unit of footwear such as a boot or the like, that has a sole, the device comprising:

an elastomeric member configured to fit around the unit, the elastomeric member having a plurality of apertures formed therein;

a cable assembly including an elongated segment that carries a plurality of cleats;

a link member connected to the cable assembly and having one end received in an aperture and riveted to the elastomeric member.

2 . The traction device of claim 1 wherein the elastomeric member includes protruding tabs, an aperture extending through each tab.

3 . The traction device of claim 1 wherein the link member is received in but does not pass through the aperture.

4 . The device of claim 1 wherein the segment includes a wire rope and the link member is connected to the segment by a loop member through which passes the wire rope.

5 . The device of claim 1 wherein the rivet extends through the link member and through the aperture.

6 . A method of making a personal traction device, comprising the steps of:

forming an elastomeric member into a substantially ring shape;

providing an elongated segment that carries a plurality of cleats;

connecting to the segment at least one link member; and

riveting the link member to the elastomeric member.

7 . The method of claim 6 including the step of forming the elastomeric member to include protruding tabs, through which each tab is formed an aperture for receiving and end of the link member and the rivet.

8 . The method of claim 6 wherein the providing step includes providing an elongated segment that includes a wire rope, and including the step of connecting the link member to the segment by passing the wire rope through the loop member that is captured by the link member.

9 . A traction device, comprising:

an elastomeric member having a plurality of apertures formed therein;

a cable assembly including an elongated segment that carries a plurality of cleats, each cleat having

an elongated core through which extends a passage having a central axis, and

through which passage fits the segment so that the cleat is rotatably carried thereon;

a protrusion extending radially from the core and including a first inclined surface thereon that is oblique to the central axis of the passage to thereby shape the protrusion such that the protrusion tapers to a first bladed edge; and

a link member connected to the cable assembly and having one end received in an aperture and riveted to the elastomeric member.

10 . The traction device of claim 9 wherein the elastomeric member includes protruding tabs, an aperture extending through each tab.
