Abstract

Equipment, systems, processes and techniques for conducting reverse osmosis processing of solutions are described. The techniques can be applied to provide diluted solution (i.e. purified solvent), concentrate solution or each. A variety of specific equipment, example systems and processes are depicted and described.

Claims (163)

1. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) a first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a selected unit comprising one of the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit and the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with both a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed; wherein:

(A) upstream of the selected unit, a feed stream is split to generate: at least a portion of the high pressure side inlet feed and at least a portion of the low pressure inlet feed, to the selected unit; and,

(B) each one of the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit and the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet.

2. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the high pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

3. A process according to claim 2 wherein:

(a) the low pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

4. A process according to claim 3 wherein:

(a) the selected unit is the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit.

5. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the low pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

6. A process according to claim 5 wherein:

(a) the selected unit is the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit.

7. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the selected unit is the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit.

8. A process according to claim 1 wherein:

(a) the selected unit is the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit.

9. A process according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the high pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

10. A process according to claim 9 wherein:

(a) the low pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

11. A process according to claim 8 wherein:

(a) the low pressure side inlet feed to the selected unit comprises only material from the feed stream that is split.

12. A process for processing an original solution into two process streams; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) a second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is directed into the first reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a high pressure side inlet feed; and,

(ii) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed into the second reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a low pressure side inlet feed.

13. A process according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) the first reverse osmosis unit is a first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit.

14. A process according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) the second reverse osmosis unit is a first, final, concentrate-generating reverse osmosis unit.

15. A process according to claim 12 wherein:

(a) at least a selected one of the first and second reverse osmosis units is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high outlet pressure side concentrate outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, no low pressure side inlet feed.

16. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) a second reverse osmosis unit; and

(iii) a third reverse osmosis unit;

(iv) a first reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump permeate solution from the second reverse osmosis unit into the first reverse osmosis unit; and,

(v) a second reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump permeate solution from the third reverse osmosis unit into second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the second reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the first reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) the second reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a low pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet;

(iv) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet;

(v) the third reverse osmosis unit is a final concentrate outlet reverse osmosis unit from the reverse osmosis unit;

(vi) the second reverse osmosis unit is a next reverse osmosis unit in permeate flow direction from the third reverse osmosis unit;

(vii) the first reverse osmosis unit is a next reverse osmosis unit in a permeate flow direction from the second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(viii) concentrate out flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is split into: a first stream directed into the third reverse osmosis unit as high pressure side inlet feed; and, a second stream directed into the third reverse osmosis unit as low pressure side inlet feed.

17. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) second and third reverse osmosis units; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis systems such that:

(i) the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, a low pressure side inlet feed;

(ii) the second reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side outlet;

(A) at least a portion of the high pressure side inlet feed to the second reverse osmosis unit comprising high pressure side outlet flow from the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(B) high pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is split to provide: a first stream directed to the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as high pressure inlet feed; and, a second stream directed into the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as a low pressure side inlet feed;

(iii) the third reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, a low pressure side inlet feed.

18. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) a first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iii) an intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system comprising at least one reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system to process the original solution such that:

(i) at least a portion of concentrate from the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit is directed into the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system, as at least part of a feed stream thereto;

(ii) at least a portion of reduced-solute solvent from the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is directed into the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as at least part of an inlet feed stream thereto;

(iii) at least a portion of concentrate from the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is directed into the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as at least part of an inlet feed stream thereto;

(iv) each reverse osmosis unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is conducted with both a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed;

(v) each reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system provides a high pressure side concentrate outlet and a low pressure side outlet; and,

(vi) the original solution to be processed is directed into at least one of the: first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system; and, the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(c) a low pressure side outlet flow from at least one reverse osmosis membrane unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system being split into two streams including:

(i) a first stream which is directed into a low pressure side inlet stream of a next permeate direction reverse osmosis membrane unit; and,

(ii) a second stream which directed into a high pressure side inlet stream of the next, permeate direction reverse osmosis membrane unit.

19. A process according to claim 18 wherein:

(a) a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed, to at least one selected reverse osmosis unit, in the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system, differ in solute concentration by no more than 20%.

20. A process according to claim 18 wherein:

(a) a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed, to at least one selected reverse osmosis unit, in the intermediate reverse osmosis unit system, have the same solute concentration.

21. A process according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) the step of providing a reverse osmosis system includes providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis systems such that:

(i) the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, no low pressure side inlet feed.

22. A process according to claim 16 including:

(a) providing the reverse osmosis system with at least:

(i) a first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) the, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iii) an intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system comprising at least one reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system to process the original solution such that:

(i) at least a portion of concentrate from the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit is directed into the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system, as at least part of a feed stream thereto;

(ii) at least a portion of reduced-solute solvent from the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is directed into the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as at least part of an inlet feed stream thereto;

(iii) at least a portion of concentrate from the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is directed into the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit as at least part of an inlet feed stream thereto;

(iv) each reverse osmosis unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system is conducted with both a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed;

(v) each reverse osmosis unit of the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system provides a high pressure side concentrate outlet and a low pressure side outlet; and,

(vi) the original solution to be processed is directed into at least one of the: first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system; and, the first, final, concentrate outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(c) a low pressure side outlet flow from at least one reverse osmosis membrane unit in the intermediate reverse osmosis membrane unit system being split into two streams including:

(i) a first stream which is directed into a low pressure side inlet stream of a next permeate direction reverse osmosis membrane unit; and,

(ii) a second stream which directed into a high pressure side inlet stream of the next, permeate direction reverse osmosis membrane unit.

23. A process according to claim 16 wherein:

(a) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from a selected second reverse osmosis unit is directed into a selected first reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a high pressure side inlet feed; and,

(ii) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first selected reverse osmosis unit is directed into the second selected reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a high pressure side inlet feed.

24. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit;

(A) the first reverse osmosis unit comprising a first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit operated with a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, no low pressure side inlet feed;

(ii) a second reverse osmosis unit;

(A) the second reverse osmosis unit being operated with a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side outlet;

(1) at least a portion of the high pressure side inlet feed to the second reverse osmosis unit comprising high pressure side outlet flow from the first, final, solvent outlet-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iii) a third reverse osmosis unit operated with a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side outlet; a low pressure side outlet; and, a low pressure side inlet feed;

(iv) the reverse osmosis system including a first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit;

(v) a first reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into the first reverse osmosis unit; and,

(vi) a second reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the first reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) the second reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a low pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet;

(iv) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet; and,

(v) at least a selected unit comprising one of: the first, final, solvent outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit; and, the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit, is operated with both a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed; wherein:

(A) upstream of the selected unit, a feed stream is split to generate: at least a portion of the high pressure side inlet feed and at least a portion of the low pressure inlet feed, to the selected unit; and,

(B) each one of the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit and the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet.

25. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) a second reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) a first reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into the first reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iv) a second reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into second reverse osmosis unit;

(b) the reverse osmosis system being configured to include at least:

(i) a first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) a first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iii) at least a selected unit comprising one of the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit and the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit being operated with both a high pressure side inlet feed and a low pressure side inlet feed; wherein:

(A) upstream of the selected unit, a feed stream is split to generate: at least a portion of the high pressure side inlet feed and at least a portion of the low pressure inlet feed, to the selected unit; and,

(B) each one of the first, final, concentrate outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit and the first, final, low pressure side outlet flow-generating reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet; and,

(c) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the first reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) the second reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a low pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet; and,

(iv) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet.

26. A process for processing an original solution; the process comprising steps of:

(a) providing a reverse osmosis system including at least:

(i) a first reverse osmosis unit;

(ii) a second reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) a first reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into the first reverse osmosis unit; and,

(iv) a second reverse osmosis unit pump configured to pump solution into second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(b) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the second reverse osmosis unit; and,

(ii) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from the second reverse osmosis unit is directed eventually through the first reverse osmosis unit;

(iii) the second reverse osmosis unit is operated with: a high pressure side inlet feed; a low pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet;

(iv) the first reverse osmosis unit is operated with at least: a high pressure side inlet feed; a high pressure side concentrate outlet; and, a low pressure side outlet;

(v) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from a selected second reverse osmosis unit is directed into a selected first reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a high pressure side inlet feed; and,

(vi) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from the first selected reverse osmosis unit is directed into the second selected reverse osmosis unit as at least a portion of a low pressure side inlet feed.

27. A process according to claim 24 including:

(a) operating the reverse osmosis system such that:

(i) at least a portion of low pressure side outlet flow from a first selected reverse osmosis unit is directed into a second selected reverse osmosis unit as a high pressure side inlet feed; and,

(ii) at least a portion of high pressure side outlet flow from a second selected reverse osmosis unit is directed into the first selected reverse osmosis unit as a low pressure side inlet feed.
