Abstract

A DCS protocol message addressed to a remote DCS station is generated at a local distributed control system (DCS). The DCS protocol message is received at a local tunneling device. The local tunneling device packages the DCS protocol message into a SCADA protocol message. The SCADA protocol message is transmitted from the local tunneling device to a remote tunneling device. The remote tunneling device receives the SCADA protocol message. The SCADA protocol message is unpackaged into a DCS protocol message at the remote tunneling device, and the DCS protocol message is placed on to a remote DCS such that it flows to the remote station. The DCS protocol message is received at the remote station.

Claims (18)

1. A method for data acquisition and monitoring, the method comprising:

receiving, at a remote tunneling device, a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) protocol message, wherein the SCADA protocol message originated as a distributed control system (DCS) protocol message addressed to a remote station;

unpacking, at the remote tunneling device, the SCADA protocol message into a DCS protocol message; and

placing, by the remote tunneling device, the DCS protocol message on to a remote DCS such that it flows to the remote station.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the SCADA protocol message comprises receiving, at the remote tunneling device, the SCADA protocol message from a local tunneling device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the SCADA protocol message comprises receiving an aggregated SCADA protocol message from a data collector, said aggregated SCADA protocol message comprising a plurality of SCADA protocol messages.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SCADA protocol comprises a Distributed Network Protocol (DNP).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the SCADA protocol comprises an IEC 101 protocol.

6. A remote tunneling device configured for communicating with a local tunneling device and a remote station, the remote tunneling device comprising:

a communications interface configured to receive Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) protocol messages from a local tunneling device and to transmit distributed control system (DCS) protocol messages to the remote station; and

a processor coupled to a machine-readable medium, the medium storing instructions, that when read by a machine operate to cause the processor to:

receive a SCADA protocol message from the local tunneling device, wherein the SCADA protocol message originated as a distributed control system (DCS) protocol message addressed to a remote station; and

unpack the SCADA protocol message into a DCS protocol message; and

place the DCS protocol message on to a remote DCS such that it flows to the remote station.

7. A non-transitory computer program product, tangibly embodied in a machine readable medium, the computer program product comprising instructions that, when read by a machine, operate to cause a remote tunneling device to:

receive a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) protocol message from a local tunneling device, wherein the SCADA protocol message originated as a distributed control system (DCS) protocol message addressed to a remote station;

unpack the SCADA protocol message into a DCS protocol message; and

place the DCS protocol message on to a remote DCS such that it flows to the remote station.
