Abstract

A needleless injector including a body at a proximal end, a shaft extending distally from the body, at least one injection orifice at a distal end of the shaft in fluid communication with a fluid chamber at the proximal end, a pressure source in communication with the fluid chamber, and a tissue tensioner located at the distal end of the shaft proximal to the injection orifice, wherein the distal end including the tissue tensioner and injection orifice is positionable within a urethral lumen so that when the tissue tensioner is deployed, tissue of the urethra is tensioned at a location for injection of fluid from the injection orifice into the tissue of the urethra.

Claims (21)

1. A needleless injector comprising:

a body at a proximal end;

a shaft extending distally from the body, the shaft comprising an outer surface extending along its length;

at least one injection orifice at a distal end of the shaft in fluid communication with a fluid chamber at the proximal end through a fluid channel that extends along a longitudinal axis of the shaft, wherein the at least one injection orifice extends in an injection direction from the fluid channel to the outer surface of the shaft;

a pressure source in communication with the fluid chamber; and

an injection orifice positioning structure located at the distal end of the shaft proximal to the injection orifice, wherein the positioning structure provides pressure when in a deployed configuration to move the at least one injection orifice in the injection direction and into contact with tissue of the urethra;

wherein the distal end comprising the injection orifice positioning structure and injection orifice is positionable within a urethral lumen between a first position in which the injection orifice positioning structure is undeployed and a second position in which the injection orifice positioning structure is deployed so that tissue of the urethra is tensioned at a location for injection of fluid from the injection orifice into the tissue of the urethra.

2. The needleless injector of claim 1 , wherein deployment of the injection orifice positioning structure comprises expansion of the injection orifice positioning structure.

3. The needleless injector of claim 1 , wherein the injection orifice positioning structure comprises a balloon.

4. The needleless injector of claim 1 , further comprising a cystoscope operatively positioned relative to the at least one injection orifice.

5. The needleless injector of claim 1 , wherein the fluid chamber comprises a volume of ethanol.

6. The needleless injector of claim 5 , wherein the fluid chamber further comprises an echogenic substance.

7. The needleless injector of claim 5 , wherein ethanol from the fluid chamber and echogenic bubbles are ejectable from the at least one injection orifice.

8. The needleless injector of claim 1 , wherein the at least one injection orifice is in a fixed position relative to the shaft.

9. The needleless injector of claim 1 , wherein fluid is ejectable from the at least one injection orifice in the injection direction, which is generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the at least one injection orifice.

10. The needleless injector of claim 3 , wherein the balloon comprises a urethral balloon.

11. The needless injector of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid path for the delivery of fluid from the fluid chamber, wherein the fluid path comprises:

an inner area of the fluid chamber;

the fluid channel extending along the longitudinal axis of the shaft; and

the injection orifice,

wherein fluid supplied by the fluid chamber is delivered to a body tissue along the fluid path and through the injection orifice.
