Abstract

A front tow extended saddle is disclosed. The saddle allows a first towing truck to mount a second truck, facing forward, behind the first truck, in order to tow the second truck to a distant location. The saddle allows the towed truck to face forward during transport, thus allowing for the normal loads and stresses of movement on the towed truck. This configuration is preferable to movement with the towed truck facing-rearward, in which the typical aerodynamic surfaces of a large truck act as a drag during transport, imposing high wind loads and unusual stresses. The front tow extended saddle is also designed to minimize the required vertical rise on the towed truck, which also avoids additional stresses during loading and unloading onto the towing truck.

Claims (32)

1. A front tow extended saddle, comprising:

a forward portion for interfacing with a saddle mount or fifth wheel of a towing truck, the forward portion comprising two first rails spaced apart a first distance and connected by one or more forward cross members;

a middle portion comprising a plurality of plates connected to a rear of said forward portion; and

a rear portion for adjustably mounting to an axle and a frame of a towed truck, the rear portion comprising two inner rails spaced apart a second distance and two outer rails spaced apart a third distance, said third distance being greater than said second distance, said inner and outer rails being connected by one or more rear cross members.

2. The saddle of claim 1 wherein said forward portion further comprises a front bracket fixed to said first rails.

3. The saddle of claim 2 wherein said forward portion further comprises a side bracket fixed to the front of one of said first rails, said side bracket including an aperture sized to accommodate one or more of electrical wiring and air brake tubing from said towing vehicle to said towed vehicle.

4. The saddle of claim 2 wherein said forward portion further comprises a plurality of rods passing through said first rails, said rods supporting an area of material for protecting said towed vehicle from debris.

5. The saddle of claim 2 wherein said forward portion further comprises a plurality of rods bolted to said first rails, said rods supporting an area of material for protecting said towed vehicle from debris.

6. The saddle of claim 1 , wherein said rear portion further comprises a plurality of tow pin assemblies affixed between said inner and outer rails, said tow pin assemblies comprising tow pins for adapting an elevation of said towed vehicle.

7. The saddle of claim 6 , wherein said rear portion further comprises an axle plate assembly mounted to said outer rails, said axle plate assembly comprising an axle plate for supporting an axle of said towed vehicle.

8. The saddle of claim 7 , wherein said rear portion further comprises at least one tie-down assembly, said tie-down assembly comprising a fork mounted on a pivot pin between one of said inner and one of said outer rails, a paddle disposed above said fork, and a pair of blocks attached to said paddle, each of said blocks having a pin, wherein strap material may be secured around both of said pins, said strap material extending over a frame of the towed vehicle to secure said towed vehicle.

9. A front tow extended saddle, comprising:

a forward portion for interfacing with a saddle mount or fifth wheel of a towing truck, the forward portion comprising two first rails spaced apart a first distance within a frame the towing truck and connected by one or more forward cross members;

a middle portion comprising a left middle plate and a right middle plate, connected to a rear of said forward portion; and

a rear portion for adjustably mounting to an axle and a frame of a towed truck, the rear portion comprising two left rails bolted together so as to sandwich said left middle plate, and two right rails bolted together so as to sandwich said right middle plate, said two left rails and two right rails spaced apart within a frame of said towed truck and being connected by one or more rear cross members.

10. The saddle of claim 9 wherein said forward portion further comprises a front bracket fixed to said first rails.

11. The saddle of claim 10 wherein said forward portion further comprises a plurality of rods passing through said first rails, said rods supporting an area of material for protecting said towed vehicle from debris.

12. The saddle of claim 10 wherein said forward portion further comprises a plurality of rods bolted to said first rails, said rods supporting an area of material for protecting said towed vehicle from debris.

13. The saddle of claim 9 wherein said left and right middle plates of said middle portion each include a plurality of slots, said middle portion further comprising a block mounted to each of said left and right middle plates through one or more of said slots, a rod passing through said blocks, and one or more tow pins secured to said rod.

14. The saddle of claim 9 further comprising a jack assembly secured between said left and right middle side plates for raising and lowering said towed vehicle.

15. The saddle of claim 9 wherein said rear portion further comprises a block mounted on each of said left and right rear rails shaped to accommodate an axle of said towed vehicle.

16. A method of preparing to tow a forward-facing towed truck with a towing truck, comprising:

providing a front tow extended saddle, said saddle comprising:

a forward portion for interfacing with a saddle mount or fifth wheel of a towing truck, the forward portion comprising two first rails spaced apart a first distance and connected by one or more forward cross members;

a middle portion comprising a plurality of plates connected to a rear of said forward portion; and

a rear portion for adjustably mounting to an axle and a frame of a towed truck, the rear portion comprising two inner rails spaced apart a second distance and two outer rails spaced apart a third distance, said third distance being greater than said second distance, said inner and outer rails being connected by one or more rear cross members;

mounting the forward portion to the towing truck; and

mounting the rear portion to at least one of an axle or a frame of the towed truck.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising the step of towing the towed truck using the front tow extended saddle.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein said rear portion further comprises an axle plate assembly mounted to said outer rails, said axle plate assembly comprising an axle plate for supporting an axle of said towed vehicle.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein said rear portion further comprises a plurality of tow pin assemblies affixed between said inner and outer rails, said tow pin assemblies comprising tow pins for adapting an elevation of said towed vehicle.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein said rear portion further comprises at least one tie-down assembly, said tie-down assembly comprising a fork mounted on a pivot pin between one of said inner and one of said outer rails, a paddle disposed above said fork, and a pair of blocks attached to said paddle, each of said blocks having a pin, wherein strap material may be secured around both of said pins, said strap material extending over a frame of the towed vehicle to secure said towed vehicle.
