Abstract

A method of treating a human body by destroying tissue cells is provided. The method involves positioning an electric field generating element near a target area containing tissue cells to be killed in the human body, and treating the human body by applying electrical pulses through the positioned electric field generating element in an amount above an upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the tissue cells in the target area, thereby killing the tissue cells in the target area.

Claims (73)

1. A method of treating a human body by destroying tissue cells, comprising:

positioning an electric field generating element near a target area containing tissue cells outside of blood vessels to be killed in the human body; and

treating the human body by applying a plurality of electrical pulses through the positioned electric field generating element in an amount above an upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the tissue cells in the target area, thereby killing the tissue cells in the target area.

2. The method of claim 1 , prior to the step of treating, further comprising selecting at least one pulse parameter based on at least one characteristic of the tissue cells to be killed.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one pulse parameter includes a pulse amplitude or pulse duration, or both.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter based on the type of the tissue cells to be killed.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one pulse parameter includes a number of pulses to be applied.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter based on the size of the tissue cells to be killed.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of adipose tissue cells.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of skin tissue cells.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is no more than 20 microseconds per pulse.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of positioning an electric field generating element includes positioning at least one electrode near the target area.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of positioning an electric field generating element includes positioning a magnetic coil near the target area.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is between 5 microseconds and 20 microseconds per pulse.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the step of positioning an electric field generating element includes positioning at least one electrode near the target area.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose amplitude is in a range of 20 Volt/mm and 2000 Volt/mm.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose amplitude is at least 20 Volt/mm.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is in a range of 10 microseconds and 100 milliseconds per pulse.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose amplitude is in a range of 20 Volt/mm and 2000 Volt/mm and whose duration is in a range of 10 microseconds and 100 milliseconds per pulse.

18. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose amplitude is at least 20 Volt/mm and whose duration is no more than 20 microseconds per pulse.

19. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose amplitude is at least 20 Volt/mm and whose duration is between 5 microseconds and 20 microseconds per pulse.

20. The method according to claim 1 , wherein, the electric field generating element includes an array of electrodes and wherein the step of positioning includes positioning the array of electrodes near the target area.

21. The method according to claim 1 , wherein:

the step of positioning includes positioning one or more electrodes near a target area containing adipose tissue cells; and

the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses in the amount above the upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the adipose tissue cells.

22. The method according to claim 1 , wherein:

the step of positioning includes positioning one or more electrodes near a target area containing skin tissue cells; and

the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses in the amount above the upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the skin tissue cells.

23. The method according to claim 1 , wherein:

the electric field generating element includes an electromagnetic coil; and

the step of applying the electrical pulses includes generating one or more magnetic pulses through the electromagnetic coil.

24. A method of treating a human body by destroying tissue cells, comprising:

connecting an electric field applicator to a pulse generator adapted to generate a plurality of electrical pulses;

positioning the electric field applicator near a target area containing tissue cells outside of blood vessels to be killed in the human body; and

treating the human body by applying the plurality of electrical pulses whose amplitude is at least 20 Volt/mm through the positioned electric field applicator in an amount above an upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the tissue cells in the target area, thereby killing the tissue cells in the target area.

25. The method of claim 24 , prior to the step of treating, further comprising selecting at least one pulse parameter based on at least one characteristic of the tissue cells to be killed.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the at least one pulse parameter includes a pulse amplitude or pulse duration, or both.

27. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter based on the type of the tissue cells to be killed.

28. The method of claim 25 , wherein the at least one pulse parameter includes a number of pulses to be applied.

29. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter based on the size of the tissue cells to be killed.

30. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of adipose tissue cells.

31. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the pulse parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of skin tissue cells.

32. The method of claim 24 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is no more than 20 microseconds per pulse.

33. The method of claim 32 , wherein the step of positioning the electric field applicator includes positioning at least one electrode near the target area.

34. The method of claim 32 , wherein the step of positioning the electric field applicator includes positioning a magnetic coil near the target area.

35. The method of claim 24 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is between 5 microseconds and 20 microseconds per pulse.

36. The method of claim 35 , wherein the step of positioning the electric field applicator includes positioning at least one electrode near the target area.

37. The method according to claim 24 , wherein the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses whose duration is in a range of 10 microseconds and 100 milliseconds per pulse.

38. The method according to claim 24 , wherein:

the step of positioning includes positioning one or more electrodes near a target area containing adipose tissue cells; and

the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses in the amount above the upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the adipose tissue cells.

39. The method according to claim 24 , wherein:

the step of positioning includes positioning one or more electrodes near a target area containing skin tissue cells; and

the step of applying includes applying the electrical pulses in the amount above the upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the skin tissue cells.

40. The method according to claim 24 , wherein:

the electric field applicator includes an electromagnetic coil; and

the step of applying the electrical pulses includes generating a plurality of magnetic pulses through the electromagnetic coil.

41. A method of treating a human body by destroying tissue cells, comprising:

selecting at least one electric field parameter based on at least one characteristic of the tissue cells to be killed;

positioning an electric field generating element near a target area containing the tissue cells outside of blood vessels to be killed in the human body; and

treating the human body by applying a plurality of electric fields using the selected electric field parameter through the positioned electric field generating element in an amount above an upper limit of electroporation to irreversibly open pores in membranes of the tissue cells in the target area, thereby killing the tissue cells in the target area.

42. The method of claim 41 , wherein the at least one electric field parameter includes an electric field amplitude or electric field duration, or both.

43. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the electric field parameter based on the type of the tissue cells to be killed.

44. The method of claim 43 , wherein the at least one electric field parameter includes an electric field amplitude or electric field duration, or both.

45. The method of claim 41 , wherein the at least one electric field parameter includes a number of electric fields to be applied.

46. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the electric field parameter based on the size of the tissue cells to be killed.

47. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the electric field parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of adipose tissue cells.

48. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of selecting includes selecting the electric field parameter which is sufficient to irreversibly open pores in membranes of skin tissue cells.

49. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electric fields whose duration is no more than 20 microseconds per electric field.

50. The method of claim 49 , wherein the step of positioning an electric field generating element includes positioning at least one electrode near the target area.

51. The method of claim 49 , wherein the step of positioning an electric field generating element includes positioning a magnetic coil near the target area.

52. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of treating includes applying the electric fields whose duration is between 5 microseconds and 20 microseconds per electric field.

53. The method of claim 41 , wherein the step of treating includes moving the electric field generating element along the target area to create a line of necrotic tissue cells.
