Abstract

Fluid delivery devices, systems and methods. The fluid delivery devices may be used to delivery fluid (e.g., insulin) to a user. The devices may have one or more inlets, and may be configured for use with an injection device, such as a syringe, and/or with a pump.

Claims (34)

1. A fluid delivery device comprising:

a body having a first inlet, a first fluid delivery passageway extending from the first inlet, and a second fluid delivery passageway;

a cannula having a portion that is coaxial with a portion of one of the first and second fluid delivery passageways; and

a passageway closing structure oriented in a first position that substantially prevents fluid from flowing from the first inlet through the first fluid delivery passageway and out of the body, while allowing fluid to flow through the second fluid delivery passageway;

the passageway closing structure being movable to a second position that substantially prevents fluid from flowing through the second fluid delivery passageway while allowing fluid to flow through the first fluid delivery passageway.

2. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the body also includes an inlet fitting that defines an outer portion of the second fluid delivery passageway and that is adapted to be releasably coupled to an infusion pump connector fitting.

3. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 configured such that fluid exiting the fluid delivery device into a living being must exit from the cannula.

4. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the second fluid delivery passageway feeds into and is oriented at a non-zero angle to the first fluid delivery passageway.

5. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the second fluid delivery passageway feeds into and is substantially perpendicular to the first fluid delivery passageway.

6. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where at least a portion of the passageway closing structure is positioned within the first fluid delivery passageway when in the first position.

7. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the passageway closing structure is positioned outside of the first fluid delivery passageway when in the first position.

8. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the passageway closing structure is biased toward the first position.

9. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the passageway closing structure is metallic.

10. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the passageway closing structure is synthetic.

11. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the cannula is integrally formed with, and extends away from, the body.

12. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the cannula includes a portion that is positioned within the first fluid delivery passageway.

13. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , where the passageway closing structure is pivotable about an axis that is substantially parallel to an axis centered within a portion of the first fluid delivery passageway.

14. The fluid delivery device of claim 13 , where the passageway closing structure includes a portion shaped like a section of a cylinder.

15. The fluid delivery device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first septum positioned at least partially within the first fluid delivery passageway.

16. The fluid delivery device of claim 15 , further comprising:

a second septum positioned at least partially within the second fluid delivery passageway.

17. The fluid delivery device of claim 15 , further comprising:

a needle guide having a portion positioned within the first fluid delivery passageway.

18. A fluid delivery device comprising:

a body having first and second fluid delivery passageways;

a cannula having a portion that is coaxial with a portion of one of the first and second fluid delivery passageways; and

a passageway closing structure oriented in a first position that at least partially blocks the first fluid delivery passageway while leaving the second fluid delivery passageway substantially unobstructed;

the passageway closing structure being movable to a second position that at least partially prevents fluid from flowing through the second fluid delivery passageway and out of the body, while leaving the first fluid delivery passageway substantially unobstructed.

19. A fluid delivery device comprising:

a body having first and second fluid delivery passageways, the second fluid delivery passageway meeting the first fluid delivery passageway at a junction location;

a cannula having a portion that is coaxial with a portion of one of the first and second fluid delivery passageways; and

a passageway closing structure oriented in a first position that at least partially prevents fluid from flowing in a downstream direction through a portion of the first fluid delivery passageway that is upstream of the junction location, while allowing fluid to flow unobstructed through the second fluid delivery passageway;

the passageway closing structure being movable to a second position that at least partially prevents fluid from flowing through the second fluid delivery passageway and out of the body while allowing fluid to flow unobstructed through the first fluid delivery passageway.
