Abstract

Prosthetic valve introducer systems and methods for deploying a heart valve prosthesis within a body lumen are disclosed. In certain embodiments, the valve introducer can include a delivery shaft to house a prosthetic valve and a distal tip, and a deployment element to push a prosthetic valve out of the distal tip of the delivery shaft. The valve introducer can include at least one finger gripping element. The delivery shaft can be inserted into a body lumen and advanced to a desired deployment location. In certain embodiments, the prosthetic valve can be deployed by pushing the deployment element in a distal direction, thereby pushing the prosthetic valve out of the distal tip of the delivery shaft.

Claims (42)

1 . A prosthetic valve introducer comprising:

a delivery shaft comprising:

a tubular member configured to house a prosthetic valve; and

a distal tip;

a deployment element configured to push a prosthetic valve out of the distal tip of the delivery shaft; and

a prosthetic valve.

2 . The prosthetic valve introducer of claim 1 , further comprising at least one finger gripping element connected to the delivery shaft.

3 . A prosthetic valve introducer system, the valve introducer comprising:

a handle comprising:

a deployment element housing;

a deployment element; and

at least one finger gripping element connected to the deployment element housing; and

a delivery shaft comprising:

a tubular member; and

a distal tip; and

a prosthetic valve,

wherein the deployment element is configured to deploy the prosthetic valve from the delivery shaft.

4 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the delivery shaft further comprises a housing capsule for the prosthetic valve.

5 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the distal tip is an atraumatic tip.

6 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the finger gripping element comprises an interior gripping surface and an exterior gripping surface.

7 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 6 , wherein the interior gripping surface is configured to allow insertion of a finger.

8 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the deployment element comprises a shaft with a proximal end.

9 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 8 , wherein the proximal end of the deployment element comprises a flat surface.

10 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 8 , wherein the proximal end of the deployment element comprises a ring element configured to allow insertion of a finger.

11 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 8 , wherein the shaft is slidably engaged with an interior surface of the deployment element housing.

12 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , further comprising a hemostatic valve configured to provide access to a body lumen.

13 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the handle further comprises an access port.

14 . The prosthetic valve introducer system of claim 3 , wherein the prosthetic valve is a self-expanding prosthetic heart valve.

15 . A method of implanting a heart valve prosthesis with a valve introducer, the valve introducer comprising:

a delivery shaft comprising:

a tubular member; and

a distal tip;

a deployment element configured to deploy a heart valve prosthesis from the delivery shaft; and

a heart valve prosthesis;

the method comprising:

inserting the delivery shaft into a body lumen at an insertion point until the distal tip reaches a deployment location; and

activating the deployment element to deploy the heart valve prosthesis from the delivery shaft.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein inserting the delivery shaft into the body lumen comprises puncturing a surface of the body lumen with the distal tip of the delivery shaft at the insertion point.

17 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising removing the valve introducer from the body lumen after deploying the heart valve prosthesis.

18 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising securing a hemostatic valve at the insertion point and inserting the delivery shaft through the hemostatic valve and into the body lumen.

19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein activating the deployment element comprises pushing the deployment element in a distal direction to deploy the heart valve prosthesis out of the distal tip of the delivery shaft.

20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein activating the deployment element comprises pulling the deployment element in a proximal direction to retract the delivery shaft to deploy the heart valve prosthesis.
