Abstract

A system and method for providing location information for communications through an access network in accordance with embodiments of the invention are disclosed. The system and method involve receiving a communication including a message from an origination device. The communication includes access point information and the message includes an identifier of the communication. The access point information from the communication is extracted and the access point information or geographic data based on the access point information is stored in a database. The message including the identifier is sent to a destination device of the message. The storing of the access point information or the geographic data in the database enables the destination device to obtain the access point information or the geographic data using the identifier included in the message by querying the database.

Claims (42)

1. A method for providing location information for communications comprising, at a server system comprising a processor and memory:

receiving a communication including a message from an origination device to a destination device separate from the server system, the communication including access point information, the message including an identifier of the communication;

extracting the access point information from the communication;

storing the identifier and at least one of the access point information and geographic data based on the access point information in a database; and

forwarding the message including the identifier to the destination device;

wherein storing the identifier and the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data in the database enables the destination device to obtain the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data using the identifier.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, at the server system:

receiving a request from the destination device to obtain the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data, the request including the identifier;

looking up the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data in the database using the identifier; and

sending the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data to the destination device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the identifier is a session identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the access point information is an identifier of a cell through which the communication is transmitted.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising, at the server system, converting the cell identifier to the geographic data and storing the geographic data in the database.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geographic data includes a postal code.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message is a Short Message Service (SMS) message.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the SMS message is received from the origination device and forwarded to the destination device in response to a promotional message.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the destination device is a promotional shortcode system configured to receive responses to a promotion.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data allow the destination device to perform marketing analysis based on the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data.

11. A system for providing location information for communications comprising:

a server system comprising a processor and memory, configured to:

receive a communication including a message from an origination device to a destination device separate from the server system, the communication including access point information, the message including an identifier of the origination device;

extract the access point information from the communication; and

store in a database the identifier and at least one of the access point information and geographic data based on the access point information;

forward the message including the identifier to the destination device;

wherein storage of the identifier and the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data in the database enables the destination device to obtain the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data using the identifier.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the access point information is an identifier of a cell from which the communication is received.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the identifier is a session identifier.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the message is a Short Message Service (SMS) message.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the server system is coupled to a short message service center configured to forward the message from the origination device to the destination device.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the destination device is a promotional shortcode system configured to receive responses to a promotion.

17. The system of claim 11 wherein the server system is further configured to:

receive a request from the destination device to obtain the at least one of the access point information or the geographic data, the request including the identifier,

look up the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data in the database using the identifier, and

send the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data to the destination device.

18. A method for providing location information for communications comprising, at a server system comprising a processor and memory:

receiving a communication including a text message from an origination device to a destination device separate from the server system, the communication including access point information, the text message including an identifier of the communication;

extracting the access point information from the communication;

storing the identifier and at least one of the access point information and geographic data based on the location information in a database; and

forwarding the text message including the identifier to the destination device;

after forwarding the text message including the identifier, receiving a request including the identifier from the destination device to obtain the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data;

looking up the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data in the database using the identifier; and

sending the at least one of the access point information and the geographic data to the destination device in response to the request.
