Abstract

In one embodiment, a method comprises, by a computer system, receiving a search term, determining a search constraint for a search query, and generating a search query. The search query includes the search term and the search constraint. The search query requires that at least a first number of search results that are returned in response to the search query match both the search term and the search constraint. The search query permits at least a second number of the search results to match only the search term. The computer system provides the search query for a search against a store of data.

Claims (29)

1. A method comprising:

by a computer system, receiving a search term from a user of an online social-networking system;

by the computer system, determining a search constraint for the search term based on social-networking information associated with the user;

by the computer system, generating a search query comprising a first logical expression, the first logical expression comprising a first logical operator and at least two first operands, one of the first operands being the search term and another one of the first operands being the search constraint and an associated weight, the associated weight corresponding to a percentage, wherein the associated weight provides a limit on a number of search results for the search query that must match the search constraint, and wherein the search query permits at least a portion of the search results for the search query to match only the search term; and

by the computer system, providing the search query for a search against a store of data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein one of the first operands comprises a second logical expression comprising a second logical operator and two or more second operands, the second operands comprising search constraints associated with respective weights.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the associated weight is specified as a percentage, fraction, decimal, ratio, whole number, or any combination thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the search constraint comprises a locality constraint or a social-graph constraint.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising executing the search query on an index of data.

6. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media in one or more computing systems, the media embodying logic that is operable when executed to:

receive a search term from a user of an online social-networking system;

determine a search constraint for the search term based on social-networking information associated with the user;

generate a search query comprising a first logical expression, the first logical expression comprising a first logical operator and at least two first operands, one of the first operands being the search term and another one of the first operands being the search constraint and an associated weight, the associated weight corresponding to a percentage, wherein the associated weight provides a limit on a number of search results for the search query that must match the search constraint, and wherein the search query permits at least a portion of the search results for the search query to match only the search term; and

provide the search query for a search against a store of data.

7. The media of claim 6 , wherein one of the first operands comprises a second logical expression comprising a second logical operator and two or more second operands, the second operands comprising search constraints associated with respective weights.

8. The media of claim 6 , wherein the associated weight is specified as a percentage, fraction, decimal, ratio, whole number, or any combination thereof.

9. The media of claim 6 , wherein the search constraint comprises a locality constraint or a social-graph constraint.

10. The media of claim 6 , further comprising executing the search query on an index of data.

11. A first computing system comprising:

a memory comprising instructions executable by one or more processors; and

the one or more processors coupled to the memory and operable to execute the instructions, the one or more processors being operable when executing the instructions to:

receive a search term from a user of an online social-networking system;

determine a search constraint for the search term based on social-networking information associated with the user;

generate a search query comprising a first logical expression, the first logical expression comprising a first logical operator and at least two first operands, one of the first operands being the search term and another one of the first operands being the search constraint and an associated weight, the associated weight corresponding to a percentage, wherein the associated weight provides a limit on a number of search results for the search query that must match the search constraint, and wherein the search query permits at least a portion of the search results for the search query to match only the search term; and

provide the search query for a search against a store of data.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein one of the first operands comprises a second logical expression comprising a second logical operator and two or more second operands, the second operands comprising search constraints associated with respective weights.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the associated weight is specified as a percentage, fraction, decimal, ratio, whole number, or any combination thereof.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the search constraint comprises a locality constraint or a social-graph constraint.

15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising executing the search query on an index of data.
