Abstract

The present disclosure relates to pesticidal compositions and to methods for controlling pests such as insects and other arthropods. More particularly, the disclosure relates to pesticidal compositions containing mineral oil and one or more additional components which, when used in combination, act synergistically to control insect and pest populations.

Claims (29)

1. A method of controlling arthropods, the method comprising:

diluting a concentrate composition with water to produce a composition comprising a first active ingredient and a second active ingredient, the first active ingredient being a mineral oil and the second active ingredient being an ester compound selected from the group consisting of ethyl lactate, butyl lactate, isopropyl myristate, γ-butyrolactone, triacetin and combinations thereof; and

contacting an arthropod with a pesticidally effective amount of the composition.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the arthropod is a cockroach.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the concentrate composition comprises an emulsifier.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises at least about 3% of ester compounds by weight of the composition.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises from about 10% to about 60% ester compounds by weight of the composition.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises at least about 30% mineral oil by weight of the composition.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises a plant essential oil or derivative.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the plant essential oil or derivative is geraniol.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises ethyl lactate and isopropyl myristate.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the mineral oil is a petroleum distillate.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the arthropod is contacted with the pesticidal composition in an amount that causes death of the arthropod.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester compound is ethyl lactate.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester compound is butyl lactate.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester compound is isopropyl myristate.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester compound is γ-butyrolactone.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the ester compound is triacetin.

17. A method of controlling arthropods, the method comprising contacting an arthropod with a pesticidally effective amount of a composition comprising a first active ingredient and a second active ingredient, the first active ingredient being a mineral oil and the second active ingredient being an ester compound selected from the group consisting of ethyl lactate, γ-butyrolactone, triacetin and combinations thereof.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the arthropod is a cockroach.

19. The method of claim 17 wherein the composition comprises at least about 3% of ester compounds by weight of the composition.

20. The method of claim 17 wherein the composition comprises from about 10% to about 60% ester compounds by weight of the composition.

21. The method of claim 17 wherein the composition comprises at least about 30% mineral oil by weight of the composition.

22. The method of claim 17 wherein the composition comprises ethyl lactate and isopropyl myristate.

23. The method of claim 17 wherein the mineral oil is a petroleum distillate.

24. The method of claim 17 wherein the arthropod is contacted with the pesticidal composition in an amount that causes death of the arthropod.

25. The method of claim 17 wherein the ester compound is ethyl lactate.

26. The method of claim 17 wherein the ester compound is γ-butyrolactone.

27. The method of claim 17 wherein the ester compound is triacetin.
