Abstract

The present disclosure discloses a method and network device for overlaying one or more broadcast groups over virtual local area networks in a wireless network. The network device receives a broadcast/multicast message from a member device of a broadcast group. The broadcast group includes a subset of devices sharing at least one common property. The broadcast/multicast message is to be received by other member devices, but not by non-member devices of the first broadcast group. Furthermore, the broadcast group includes one of (i) a subset of devices from a single virtual local area network, and (ii) at least two subsets of devices from different virtual local area networks. The network device then determines the broadcast group associated with the received broadcast/multicast message based on the common property, and then transmits the received broadcast/multicast message to other member devices in the broadcast group.

Claims (48)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by one or more hardware processors, causes performance of operations comprising:

selecting a plurality of devices as members of a broadcast group, wherein a first member device of the broadcast group is on a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and wherein a second member device of the broadcast group is on a second VLAN different than the first VLAN;

receiving a message from a particular member device of the broadcast group;

responsive at least to receiving the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, forwarding the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group to all other members of the broadcast group,

wherein forwarding the message from the particular member device comprises forwarding the message to the first member device on the first VLAN and forwarding the message to the second member device on the second VLAN;

receiving a second message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, wherein the second message is a broadcast message;

based on a header of the broadcast message received from the particular member device of the broadcast group, selecting and performing one of a group of operations comprising:

forwarding the broadcast message to all other members of the broadcast group including the first member device on the first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and the second member device on the second VLAN; or

forwarding the broadcast message to members of a same VLAN as the particular member device without forwarding the broadcast message to members of other VLANs.

2. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of devices are dynamically selected as members of the broadcast group based on a geographical location of each of the plurality of devices.

3. The medium of claim 1 , wherein devices on the first VLAN comprise devices with a connection to a first physical network and wherein devices on the second VLAN comprise devices with a connection to a second physical network.

4. The medium of claim 1 , wherein devices on the first VLAN are associated with a first IP subnet and wherein devices on the second VLAN are associated with a second IP subnet different than the first IP subnet.

5. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on a user role associated with the members of the broadcast group.

6. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on applications executing on the members of the broadcast group.

7. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on one or more characteristics of a user of the member devices.

8. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the first member device of the broadcast group is concurrently a member of a different broadcast group.

9. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the first member device of the broadcast group receives both (a) broadcast messages sent by other members of the broadcast group and (b) broadcast messages sent by devices on the first VLAN.

10. A system comprising:

at least one device comprising a hardware processor;

the system being configured to perform:

selecting a plurality of devices as members of a broadcast group, wherein a first member device of the broadcast group is on a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and wherein a second member device of the broadcast group is on a second VLAN different than the first VLAN;

receiving a message from a particular member device of the broadcast group;

responsive at least to receiving the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, forwarding the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group to all other members of the broadcast group,

wherein forwarding the message from the particular member device comprises forwarding the message to the first member device on the first VLAN and forwarding the message to the second member device on the second VLAN;

receiving a second message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, wherein the second message is a broadcast message;

based on a header of the broadcast message received from the particular member device of the broadcast group, selecting and performing one of a group of operations comprising:

forwarding the broadcast message to all other members of the broadcast group including the first member device on the first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and the second member device on the second VLAN; or

forwarding the broadcast message to members of a same VLAN as the particular member device without forwarding the broadcast message to members of other VLANs.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of devices are dynamically selected as members of the broadcast group based on a geographical location of each of the plurality of devices.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein devices on the first VLAN comprise devices with a connection to a first physical network and wherein devices on the second VLAN comprise devices with a connection to a second physical network.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein devices on the first VLAN are associated with a first IP subnet and wherein devices on the second VLAN are associated with a second IP subnet different than the first IP subnet.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on a user role associated with the members of the broadcast group.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on applications executing on the members of the broadcast group.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise dynamically modifying members of the broadcast group based on one or more characteristics of a user of the member devices.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first member device of the broadcast group is concurrently a member of a different broadcast group.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first member device of the broadcast group receives both (a) broadcast messages sent by other members of the broadcast group and (b) broadcast messages sent by devices on the first VLAN.

19. A method comprising:

selecting a plurality of devices as members of a broadcast group, wherein a first member device of the broadcast group is on a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and wherein a second member device of the broadcast group is on a second VLAN different than the first VLAN;

receiving a message from a particular member device of the broadcast group;

responsive at least to receiving the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, forwarding the message from the particular member device of the broadcast group to all other members of the broadcast group,

wherein forwarding the message from the particular member device comprises forwarding the message to the first member device on the first VLAN and forwarding the message to the second member device on the second VLAN;

receiving a second message from the particular member device of the broadcast group, wherein the second message is a broadcast message;

based on a header of the broadcast message received from the particular member device of the broadcast group, selecting and performing one of a group of operations comprising:

forwarding the broadcast message to all other members of the broadcast group including the first member device on the first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and the second member device on the second VLAN; or

forwarding the broadcast message to members of a same VLAN as the particular member device without forwarding the broadcast message to members of other VLANs;

wherein the method is performed by at least one device comprising a hardware processor.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the first member device of the broadcast group receives both (a) broadcast messages sent by other members of the broadcast group and (b) broadcast messages sent by devices on the first VLAN.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of devices are dynamically selected as members of the broadcast group based on a geographical location of each of the plurality of devices.
