Abstract

A method for the augmentation of immune function is described. The invention comprises a combination of β-1,3 (4)-endoglucanohydrolase, β-1,3 (4)-glucan, diatomaceous earth, mineral clay and glucomannan, which is fed to or consumed by mammalian or avian species in amounts sufficient to augment immune function. The invention described may be admixed with feeds or foods, incorporated into pelleted feeds or foods or administered orally to mammalian and avian species.

Claims (22)

1. A method for augmenting function of an animal's innate immune system, comprising:

providing a composition comprising a combination of β-glucans, β-1,3 (4)-endoglucanohydrolase, silica, a mineral clay, and mannans; and

administering the composition to an animal selected from mammalian and avian species, thereby augmenting the animal's innate immune function and reducing susceptibility to an infection.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein augmenting the animal's innate immune function includes increasing the expression of L-selectin, interleukin-1β, or a combination thereof.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the mammalian species include all ruminant animals.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the avian species include poultry species used in commercial livestock production.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the animal is immunosuppressed.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the animal is immunosuppressed as result of a cause selected from the group consisting of pregnancy, elevated stress hormone levels, drug treatment, pathogen exposure, and combinations thereof.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the pathogen is a pathogenic mold.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the mineral clay comprises montmorillonite, bentonite, aluminosilicate, or zeolite clays, or mixtures thereof.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the β-1,3 (4) -endoglucanohydrolase is produced from submerged fermentation of Trichoderma longibrachiatum.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition comprises between 15% and 40% silica, between 50% and 81% mineral clay, between 1.0% and 5.0% β-glucans, between 0.05% and 3.0% β-1,3 (4)-endoglucanohydrolase and between 1% and 8.0% mannans.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition consists essentially of β-glucans, β-1,3 (4)-endoglucanohydrolase, silica, a mineral clay, and mannans.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the composition comprises formulating the composition.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein administering the composition comprises admixing the composition into foods or animal feedstuffs that is subsequently fed to the animal.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the composition is admixed into the foods or animal feedstuffs in a concentration of between 0.0125% and 5% by weight of the foods or animal feedstuffs.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein administering the composition comprises feeding the composition to the mammalian or avian species as a supplement in an amount of 0.016 grams/kg to 0.37 grams/kg of live body weight per day.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein administering the composition comprises administering the composition to the animal in an amount from 0.125% to 0.5% by weight of feed.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition is a prophylactic when administered to the animal.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein administering the composition to the animal increases neutrophil function, reduces pathogen load in the animal's blood, increases the expression levels of neutrophil L-selectin in the animal, increases the expression levels of interleukin-1β in the animal, increases neutrophil phagocytosis in the animal, increases oxidative burst killing in the animal, increases extrusion of neutrophil extracellular traps in the animal, or any combination thereof.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the silica is obtained from diatomaceous earth.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the mannans comprise glucomannan.
