Abstract

In some aspects, a retaining cap for a plasma arc torch can include a shell having an exterior surface that defines, at least in part, a first liquid coolant channel, a liner circumferentially disposed within the shell and having an interior surface that defines, at least in part, a second liquid coolant channel, and a gas flow channel defined at least in part by and located between the shell and the liner.

Claims (32)

1. A nozzle retaining cap for securing a nozzle to a plasma arc torch, the nozzle retaining cap comprising:

an outer component having an interior surface and an exterior surface, the exterior surface of the outer component defining, at least in part, a first liquid coolant channel, the outer component having a seal between the outer component and a shield;

an inner component circumferentially disposed within the outer component and having an exterior surface and an interior surface, the interior surface of the inner component defining, at least in part, a second liquid coolant channel, the inner component having a seal between the inner component and a nozzle;

a plasma shield gas flow channel defined at least in part by the interior surface of the outer component and the exterior surface of the inner component; and

a port located at an end of the plasma shield gas flow channel between the outer component and the inner component.

2. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the first liquid coolant channel is in fluid communication with the second liquid coolant channel.

3. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the first liquid coolant channel is a return flow of liquid coolant.

4. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the second liquid coolant channel is a supply flow of liquid coolant.

5. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the gas flow channel supplies a shield gas to a workpiece.

6. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the interior surface of the inner component comprises a sealing assembly that seals liquid coolant relative to a plasma arc torch body.

7. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the interior surface of the inner component is secured relative to a nozzle of the plasma arc torch.

8. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the interior surface of the inner component and a plasma arc torch body define, at least in part, the second liquid coolant channel.

9. The retaining cap of claim 1 , wherein the exterior surface of the outer component and an outer retaining cap of the plasma arc torch define, at least in part, the first liquid coolant channel.

10. A retaining cap for a plasma arc torch, the retaining cap comprising:

a shell having an exterior surface that defines, at least in part, a first liquid coolant channel, the shell having a seal between the shell and a shield;

a liner circumferentially disposed within the shell and having an interior surface that defines, at least in part, a second liquid coolant channel, the liner having a seal between the liner and a nozzle; and

a plasma shield gas flow channel defined at least in part by and located between the shell and the liner.

11. A method for cooling a plasma arc torch, the method comprising:

directing a liquid coolant to an electrode;

directing the liquid coolant to a nozzle through a first liquid coolant channel defined, at least in part, by an exterior surface of a first nozzle retaining cap, the first nozzle retaining cap having a seal between the first nozzle retaining cap and a shield;

directing the liquid coolant from the nozzle to a shield through a second liquid coolant channel defined, at least in part, by an interior surface of a second retaining cap, the second nozzle retaining cap having a seal between the second nozzle retaining cap and a nozzle; and

directing a plasma shield gas towards the nozzle through a gas flow channel defined, at least in part, by the first retaining cap and disposed between the first liquid coolant channel and the second liquid coolant channel.

12. A plasma arc torch system comprising:

a torch body including a plasma gas flow path for directing a plasma gas to a plasma chamber in which a plasma arc is formed;

an electrode;

a nozzle disposed relative to the electrode to define the plasma chamber; and the nozzle retaining cap of claim 1 , secured relative to the nozzle.

13. The plasma arc torch system of claim 12 , further comprising a shield disposed relative to the nozzle and a shield retaining cap secured relative to the shield.

14. The retaining cap of claim 10 , further comprising a port located at an end of the gas flow channel between the liner and the shell.

15. The nozzle retaining cap of claim 1 wherein at least one of the seal of the outer component or the seal of the inner component is a liquid seal.

16. The nozzle retaining cap of claim 1 wherein the outer component seal seals with a first liquid coolant channel and the inner component seal seals with a second liquid coolant channel.

17. The nozzle retaining cap of claim 1 wherein the outer component seal seals with a first liquid coolant channel or the inner component seal seals with a second liquid coolant channel.

18. The nozzle retaining cap of claim 1 wherein an end of the outer component is configured to directly contact a shield of the plasma arc torch.
