Abstract

Techniques for monitoring and tracking assets and providing notifications to users are disclosed. In one aspect, a request to track an asset and enterprise data describing the asset are received, a tag is selected to associate with the asset, an event notification is received from the tag, and a user notification is generated from the event notification and the enterprise data. In another aspect, a request for a tag is received, a tag is selected in response to the request, a tag is routed to the origin location for the tag, a notification is received that the tag has arrived at a destination location, and the tag is routed from the destination location to a tag pool.

Claims (49)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving input at a tag pool management system from a user requesting to track an asset, the request including one or more monitoring requirements for monitoring the asset, enterprise data for the asset, and a origin location for the asset;

selecting, by the tag pool management system, a tag device to associate with the asset in accordance with the input and the monitoring requirements, wherein the tag device is configured to monitor the asset according to the monitoring requirements;

routing, by the tag pool management system, the tag device to the origin location;

receiving, by the tag pool management system, an event notification for the tag device, as the tag device travels from the origin location to a destination location;

determining, by the tag pool management system, a preference for the event notification; and

generating, by the tag pool management system, a user notification from the event notification and the enterprise data, and then providing the user notification to a user in accordance with the determined preference.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the monitoring requirements specify that security monitoring of the asset is required; and

selecting the tag device in accordance with the monitoring requirements includes selecting a tag device capable of performing security monitoring of the asset.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the monitoring requirements specify that environmental monitoring of the asset is required; and

selecting the tag device in accordance with the monitoring requirements includes selecting a tag device capable of performing environmental monitoring of the asset.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the input further includes an expected configuration of the asset; and

selecting the tag device includes selecting a tag device capable of being coupled to an asset having the expected configuration.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user notification is a report of the event notification augmented by details extracted from the enterprise data for the asset.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

the enterprise data includes transactional data associated with a purchase of an item in the asset by a buyer from a seller; and

the user notification identifies the item and alerts the user that the event notification was received for the asset containing the item.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transactional data includes purchase order data from a purchase order generated by the buyer.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transactional data includes invoice data from an invoice generated by the seller.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the enterprise data includes data describing a division of an enterprise associated with an item in the asset.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the enterprise data includes a product associated with an item in the asset.

11. The method of claim 5 , wherein the enterprise data includes a product group associated with an item in the asset.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the enterprise data includes shipment route data describing a shipment route for the asset, and the user notification is an estimated time of arrival for the asset.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the shipment route data specifies one or more locations on the shipment route and an expected time of arrival at each location.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user notification includes a geospatial representation of a journey taken by the asset.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user notification includes a customs inspection risk score predicting whether the asset should be inspected by customs officials.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the user is a customs official.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a billing invoice, the billing invoice requesting payment for tracking services; and

sending the billing invoice to the user.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes:

receiving input at a tag pool management system from a user requesting to track an asset, the request including one or more monitoring requirements for monitoring the asset, enterprise data for the asset, and a origin location for the asset;

selecting, by the tag pool management system, a tag device to associate with the asset in accordance with the input and the monitoring requirements, wherein the tag device is configured to monitor the asset according to the monitoring requirements;

routing, by the tag pool management system, the tag device to the origin location;

receiving, by the tag pool management system, an event notification for the tag device, as the tag device travels from the origin location to a destination location;

determining, by the tag pool management system, a preference for the event notification; and

generating, by the tag pool management system, a user notification from the event notification and the enterprise data, and then providing the user notification to a user in accordance with the determined preference.

19. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a computer-readable medium including one or more sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, causes:

receiving input at a tag pool management system from a user requesting to track an asset, the request including one or more monitoring requirements for monitoring the asset, enterprise data for the asset, and a origin location for the asset;

selecting, by the tag pool management system, a tag device to associate with the asset in accordance with the input and the monitoring requirements, wherein the tag device is configured to monitor the asset according to the monitoring requirements;

routing, by the tag pool management system, the tag device to the origin location;

receiving, by the tag pool management system, an event notification for the tag device, as the tag device travels from the origin location to a destination location;

determining, by the tag pool management system, a preference for the event notification; and

generating, by the tag pool management system, a user notification from the event notification and the enterprise data, and then providing the user notification to a user in accordance with the determined preference.
