Abstract

Disclosed are new approaches for scheduling workers at remote locations. Work assignments may be organized into shifts associated with one or more workers and one or more recipients. Tasks are associated with the shift and have a status associated therewith that can be updated by a worker. Shifts may be replicated by cutting and pasting or by specifying a recurrence definition. The tasks associated with a shift may then be replicated. The status of tasks may be updated using a voice telephony system. The status of tasks may also be reported from a computer located on the recipient premise. Text and/or voice comments and the task status may be accessible by managers, clients, and concerned parties from a web portal accessible using a computing device, such as a tablet computer. Special classification activities may also be automatically specified according to rules and associated with shifts and replicated shifts.

Claims (60)

1 . A method for managing employees comprising:

receiving, by a server computer, at least one special activity specification rule;

receiving, by the server computer, a shift specification including a first date and a time period definition;

automatically associating, by the server computer, at least one special activity with the shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule; and

storing, by the server computer, a shift according to the shift specification having the special activities associated therewith.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a plurality of tasks; and

associating the plurality of tasks with the shift.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving an instruction to replicate the shift including a replication definition including at least one second date;

in response to receipt of the instruction to replicate the shift, defining at least one replicate shift and automatically associating the plurality of tasks with the at least one replicate shift; and

automatically associating at least one special activity with the at least one replicate shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

for each of the at least one special activity, receiving reporting of a start time and an end time for the special activity and recording the start and end times in association with the shift; and

for each task of the plurality of tasks, receiving reporting of completion of the task and associating a record of completion with the shift.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically associating at least one special activity with the shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule further comprises:

evaluating a time of day of the time period definition; and

defining the at least one special activity according to the time of day.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically associating, by the server computer, at least one special activity with the shift according to the special activity specification rule further comprises:

evaluating a time of day of the time period definition; and

if the time of day indicates a diurnal period, associating daytime activities with the shift.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the daytime activities include at least one of meals and breaks.

8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising, if the time of day indicates a nocturnal period, associating nighttime activities with the shift.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the nighttime activities include sleeping.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically associating, by the server computer, at least one special activity with the shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule further comprises:

evaluating a duration of the shift according to the time period definition; and

associating at least one of a meal, a break, and a sleep period with the shift according to the duration and the at least one special activity specification rule.

The method of claim 1 , wherein automatically associating, by the server computer, at least one special activity with the shift according to the special activity specification rule further comprises associating with the at least one special activity a completion time for the at least one special activity according to an evaluation of the at least one special activity specification rule and the shift specification.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising transmitting an alert to a provider in advance of the completion time.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising transmitting an alert to a provider in accordance with the completion time.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising transmitting an alert to a supervisor if completion of the at least one special activity is not reported by the completion time.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one special activity has a first billing rate associated therewith and the shift has a second billing rate associated therewith; and

wherein the method further comprises:

receiving notice of start and finish times of the shift;

receiving notice of completion of the at least one special activity;

computing a payable amount for the shift according to the start and finish times of the shift, notice of completion of the at least one special activity, and the first and second billing rates.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one special activity has a first billing rate associated therewith and the shift has a second billing rate associated therewith; and

wherein the method further comprises:

receiving notice of start and finish times of the shift;

receiving notice of start and finish times of the at least one special activity;

computing a first payable amount for the shift according to the start and finish times of the shift and the second billing rate; and

computing a second payable amount by adjusting the first payable amount according to the start and finish times of the at least one special activity and the first billing rate.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one special activity has a first billing rate associated therewith and the shift has a second billing rate associated therewith; and

wherein the method further comprises:

receiving notice of start and finish times of the shift;

receiving notice of start and finish times of the at least one special activity;

computing a first payable amount for the shift according to the second billing rate and the start and finish times of the shift reduced according to the start and finish times of the at least one special activity; and

computing a second payable amount according to the start and finish times of the at least one special activity and the first billing rate.

18 . A system for managing employees comprising one or more processors and one or more memory devices operably coupled to the one or more processors, the one or more memory devices storing executable and operational code effective to cause the one or more processors to:

receive at least one special activity specification rule;

receive a shift specification including a first date and a time period definition;

automatically associate at least one special activity with the shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule; and

store a shift according to the shift specification having the special activities associated therewith.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the executable and operational code are further effective to cause the one or more processors to

receive a plurality of tasks; and

associate the plurality of tasks with the shift.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the executable and operational code are further effective to cause the one or more processors to:

receive an instruction to replicate the shift including a replication definition including at least one second date;

in response to receipt of the instruction to replicate the shift, define at least one replicate shift and automatically associating the plurality of tasks with each at least one replicate shift; and

automatically associate at least one special activity with the each at least one replicate shift according to the at least one special activity specification rule.
