Abstract

An optical processor is presented for applying optical processing to a light field passing through a predetermined imaging lens unit. The optical processor comprises a pattern in the form of spaced apart regions of different optical properties. The pattern is configured to define a phase coder, and a dispersion profile coder. The phase coder affects profiles of Through Focus Modulation Transfer Function (TFMTF) for different wavelength components of the light field in accordance with a predetermined profile of an extended depth of focusing to be obtained by the imaging lens unit. The dispersion profile coder is configured in accordance with the imaging lens unit and the predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing to provide a predetermined overlapping between said TFMTF profiles within said predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing.

Claims (19)

1. An optical processor for use with a predetermined imaging lens, being a single- or multi-focal lens and having an effective aperture, optical power and depth of focus, wherein

said optical processor is configured to define a combined diffractive pattern being a superposition of first and second patterns and configured to provide a predetermined profile of an extended depth of focusing to be obtained by said imaging lens, wherein:

the first pattern is in the form of a predetermined number of spaced apart phase transition regions of substantially the same transparency and arranged with a low spatial frequency, so as to induce substantially non-diffractive phase effect onto a light field passing through said first pattern, said first pattern when applied to the effective aperture of the predetermined lens thereby defining a phase coder affecting profiles of Through Focus Modulation Transfer Function (TFMTF) for different wavelength components of said light field in accordance with the predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing, and

the second pattern is a diffractive pattern defining a dispersion profile coder configured in accordance with said predetermined imaging lens and said predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing to induce dispersion providing a predetermined optical power addition to the optical power of the predetermined imaging lens and providing a predetermined overlapping between said TFMTF profiles within said predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing.

2. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second patterns are located at front and rear surfaces of the imaging lens unit, with respect to light propagation direction towards the predetermined imaging lens.

3. An optical processor according to claim 2 , wherein the first and second patterns are in the form of first and second surface reliefs on said front and rear surfaces of the predetermined imaging lens.

4. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second patterns are defined by phase and diffractive masks located at the same or opposite sides of the predetermined imaging lens.

5. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second patterns are incorporated in the predetermined imaging lens.

6. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second patterns is incorporated in the predetermined imaging lens, and other of said first and second patterns is a mask located at either side of the predetermined imaging lens.

7. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined imaging lens is a contact lens.

8. An optical processor according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined imaging lens comprises multiple zones having different optical powers.

9. An imaging lens arrangement comprising:

an imaging lens being a single- or multi-focal lens and having an effective aperture, optical power and depth of focus; and

an optical processor being at least partially carried by said imaging lens, the optical processor comprising first and second patterns located in the vicinity of the effective aperture of the lens, the first pattern being a phase coder comprising a predetermined number of phase transitions being of substantially the same transparency and arranged with a low spatial frequency within the effective aperture of the lens, so as to induce substantially non-diffractive phase effect onto a light field passing through the effective aperture of the lens affecting profiles of Through Focus Modulation Transfer Function (TFMTF) for different wavelength components of the light field in accordance with a predetermined profile of an extended depth of focusing to be obtained by said imaging lens arrangement; and the second pattern being diffractive configured and operable as a dispersion profile coder in accordance with the optical power of the lens and said predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing to induce dispersion and provide a predetermined optical power addition to the optical power of the imaging lens, to provide a predetermined overlapping between said TFMTF profiles within said predetermined profile of the extended depth of focusing.

10. An imaging lens arrangement according to claim 9 ,

wherein the imaging lens is an ophthalmic lens.

11. An imaging lens arrangement according to claim 10 , wherein said ophthalmic lens is one of the following lenses: a contact lens, an intraocular lens, or a intracorneal lens.

12. An imaging lens arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the imaging lens is a contact lens.

13. An imaging lens arrangement according to claim 9 , wherein the imaging lens comprises multiple zones having different optical powers.
