Abstract

A deblocking filter applies filtering to reduce blocking artifacts from an encoded stream in which image data has been encoded in individual blocks. A filter strength adjuster adjusts the filter strength according to block sizes of the predictive image data. For example, during image encoding, the filter strength is adjusted according to the block size of the predictive image data yielding the best encoding efficiency generated using filtered and decoded image data. Filtering may also be applied to remove blocking artifacts from decoded image data during image decoding, with the filter strength being adjusted according to the block sizes of the predictive image data. Decoded images with favorable image quality are obtained, even in the case of using extended macroblock sizes.

Claims (27)

1. An image processing apparatus comprising:

circuitry configured to:

generate decoded image data by decoding an encoded stream in which image data has been encoded in individual blocks;

adjust a strength of a filter for at least one of neighboring blocks adjacent at a block boundary in the decoded image data using values selected according to a size of the at least one of neighboring blocks; and

apply filtering to remove blocking artifacts from the at least one of neighboring blocks according to the adjusted strength of the filter, wherein

if the at least one of neighboring blocks is a first size, the circuitry is configured to adjust the strength of the filter for the at least one of neighboring blocks based on a first value selected according to the size of the at least one of neighboring blocks,

if the at least one of neighboring blocks is a second size that is smaller than the first size, the circuitry is configured to adjust the strength of the filter for the at least one of neighboring blocks based on a second value that is different from the first value and selected according to the size of the at least one of neighboring blocks, and

the values are configured to increase as the block sizes of the neighboring blocks increase.

2. The image processing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the values are configured according to a combination of block sizes of the neighboring blocks.

3. The image processing apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein

the values are configured according to a larger block size in a case that the block sizes differ between two neighboring blocks.

4. The image processing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the circuitry is configured to configure the values for each block size of the neighboring blocks, and select the values according to the block sizes of the neighboring blocks.

5. The image processing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the size is a size of 16×16 pixels, being the macroblock size of AVC standard.

6. The image processing apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

if the at least one of neighboring blocks is a third size that is smaller than the second size, the circuitry is configured to adjust the strength of the filter for the at least one of neighboring blocks based on a third value that is different from both the first value and the second value and is selected according to the size of the at least one of neighboring blocks.

7. The image processing apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein

the third value<the second value<the first value.

8. An image processing method comprising:

generating decoded image data by decoding an encoded stream in which image data has been encoded in individual blocks;

adjusting, by circuitry of an information processing apparatus, a strength of a filter for at least one of neighboring blocks adjacent at a block boundary in the decoded image data using values selected according to a size of the at least one neighboring blocks; and

applying, by the circuitry, filtering to remove blocking artifacts from the at least one of neighboring according to the adjusted strength of the filter, wherein

if the at least one of neighboring blocks is a first size, the adjusting includes adjusting the strength of the filter for the at least one of neighboring blocks based on a first value selected according to the size of the at least one of neighboring blocks,

if the at least one of neighboring blocks is a second size that is smaller than the first size, the adjusting includes adjusting the strength of the filter for the at least one of neighboring blocks based on a second value that is different from the first value and selected according to the size of the at least one of neighboring blocks, and

the values are configured to increase as the block sizes of the neighboring blocks increase.
