Abstract

Methods, system and compositions for making and using a bioresorbable linked dressing made of bioresorbable microspheres in various configurations are provided for use in applying reduced pressure to a wound site. The methods include manufacture of a bioresorbable dressing comprising a casing and bioresorbable microspheres in the form of a rope shape. Further, the casing of the dressing comprises pores formed by a porogen system that may be activated by external to the wound or formed in situ within the wound site. The shape of the dressing allows the dressing to be placed into the wound site such that it fills the shape and size of the wound. Embodiments include formation of various rope dressing and their use in conjunction with reduced pressure therapy.

Claims (36)

1. A method of promoting new tissue growth and/or wound healing at a wound site, the method comprising:

manufacturing a wound dressing that is bioresorbable comprising a casing and microspheres that are bioresorbable,

wherein the casing comprises one or more bioresorbable polymers and a porogen system,

wherein the microspheres comprise one or more bioresorbable polymers,

wherein the microspheres are contained within the casing, and

wherein the casing comprises constrictions at regular, repeating intervals;

contacting the wound dressing with a fluid such that the porogen system forms pores in the casing;

positioning the wound dressing onto the wound site such that the wound dressing contacts the wound site after contacting the wound dressing with a fluid;

covering the wound dressing with a drape; and

applying a reduced pressure to the wound site through the wound dressing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the casing further comprises a plasticizer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the microspheres is between about 400 and about 600 microns.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the pores is between about 100 microns and about 500 microns.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the microspheres is between about 20 and about 800 microns.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing comprises a manifold and the method further comprises distributing reduced pressure to the wound site through the wound dressing.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the dressing comprises a manifold and the method further comprises channeling body fluids through the wound dressing to a tube supplying reduced pressure.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing comprises a first wound dressing and a second wound dressing, the step of manufacturing a wound dressing further comprising twisting the first wound dressing and the second wound dressing together.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing comprises a first wound dressing and a second wound dressing, the step of manufacturing a wound dressing further comprising braiding the first wound dressing and the second wound dressing together.

10. A method of promoting new tissue growth and/or wound healing at a wound site, the method comprising:

manufacturing a wound dressing that is bioresorbable comprising a casing and microparticles that are bioresorbable,

wherein the casing comprises one or more bioresorbable polymers and a porogen system,

wherein the microparticles are formed of one or more bioresorbable polymers,

wherein the microparticles are contained within the casing, and

wherein the casing comprises constrictions at regular, repeating intervals;

positioning the wound dressing into the wound site such that the wound dressing contacts the wound site, wherein the porogen system is activated in situ by wound fluids to initiate pore formation;

positioning a distribution manifold onto the wound dressing such that the distribution manifold contacts the wound dressing;

covering the wound dressing with a drape; and

applying a reduced pressure to the wound site through the wound dressing and distribution manifold.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising drawing wound fluids through the wound dressing to activate the porogen system.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein pore formation comprises dissolving a portion of the casing to form pores extending through the casing.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the pores have a size smaller than a size of the microparticles.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the casing has a porosity between about 50% and 90% following pore formation.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the casing has a porosity of about 50% following pore formation.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of applying reduced pressure further comprises mechanically compressing the wound dressing with the distibution manifold and the drape to press the wound dressing into the wound site.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the step of positioning the distribution manifold further comprises covering the wound dressing with the manifold.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the wound dressing is a rope-shaped wound dressing and the step of positioning the wound dressing in the wound site further comprises coiling the wound dressing to fill a shape, size, and depth of the wound site.
