Abstract

Implantable materials having engineered surfaces and method of making same comprising geometric features on at least one surface of the material having at least one of chemical, physiochemical and electrochemical activity different than regions of the at least one surface without the features.

Claims (20)

1. A method of making an implantable material suitable for use in medical devices and having increased cell growth properties, comprising the steps of:

a. providing an implantable material that is made of a biocompatible metal having at least one surface intended to contact tissue or body fluids in vivo; and

b. chemically etching the at least one surface to form a pattern of geometric features, wherein the chemical etching forms a depth and width of a first plurality of grain boundaries of the at least one surface to promote the formation of an endothelial cell layer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible metal is stainless steel.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible metal is nitinol.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical etching has a duration between about 30 seconds and 5 minutes.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical etching has a duration between about 5 minutes and 2 hours.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical etching is performed by an etching reagent selected from the group consisting of Glycergia (HNO 3 +HCl+C 3 H 5 (OH) 3 ), nitric acid (HNO 3 )+orthophosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ), nitric acid (HNO 3 )+hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO 3 )+glycerol (C 3 H 5 (OH) 3 ), nitric acid (HNO 3 ), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and orthophosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ).

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemically etched surface has a water contact angle between about 10° and about 70°.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical etching forms a depth and width of a second plurality of grain boundaries of the at least one surface for drug loading.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chemical etching causes the geometric features to have a grain structure and forms the first plurality of grain boundaries surrounding the grain structure, wherein the first plurality of grain boundaries has a higher amount of positive charge as compared to the grain structure which promotes the formation of the endothelial cell layer.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geometric features are distributed randomly.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geometric features are distributed evenly.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geometric features include a smooth grain surface.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a peptide is grafted onto the chemically etched surface.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the peptide is selected from the group consisting of Gly-Arg-Glu-Asp-Val-Tyr (SEQ ID NO:1), Tyr-Ile-Gly-Ser-Arg (SEQ ID NO:2), Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Val (SEQ ID NO:3), Arg-Glu-Asp-Val (SEQ ID NO:4), Leu-Asp-Val, Asp-Gly-Glu-Ala (SEQ ID NO:5), Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Tyr (SEQ ID NO:6), Tyr-Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp (SEQ ID NO:7), Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser-Pro (SEQ ID NO:8), Arg-Gly-Asp, and Arg-Glu-Asp-Val (SEQ ID NO:10).

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the peptide contains adhesion domains of extracellular matrix proteins.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the geometric features include random shapes.

17. The method of claim 8 , wherein the loaded drug comprises negatively charged molecules.

18. The method of claim 9 , wherein the grain structure has a surface area of about 10-150 μm 2 .
