Abstract

A method and apparatus is disclosed which reduces or removes the effectiveness of commercial skip systems such as presently found in VCRs, PVRs, etc. which are designed to delete commercials from signal material upon playback of a previously recorded version of the signal material. In an embodiment, the effectiveness of the commercial skip system is reduced or removed by adding a flat field of selected signal level to active line portions of video lines of the signal material. Other embodiments modify the normal fade to black signal indicative of a commercial to provide a fade to non-black signal. In further embodiments, a fade to non-black signal is inserted in an overscan area of the signal picture. Still further embodiments modify audio signals or selected signals in the horizontal blanking interval which may be used in commercial skip systems to detect the presence of commercials.

Claims (37)

1. A method for processing a media signal to indicate the presence of a commercial in the media signal, the method comprising:

receiving the media signal;

storing a signal measurement value;

monitoring the media signal;

while monitoring the media signal, updating the stored signal measurement value based on the monitoring;

updating a threshold value based on the updated signal measurement value;

determining if the media signal is transitioning to the commercial based on the updated signal measurement value and the updated threshold value; and

indicating the presence of the commercial based on the determination.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the method further comprises modifying the media signal based on the updated signal measurement value; and

determining if the media signal is transitioning to the commercial comprises determining if the modified media signal is transitioning to the commercial.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media signal comprises an audio signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media signal comprises a video signal.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the updated signal measurement value comprises a lowest signal value of the video signal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the lowest signal value of the video signal comprises a minimum luminance signal value.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving step and the monitoring step occur substantially simultaneously.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received media signal was previously modified to reduce the effectiveness of a commercial skip system.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring the media signal comprises monitoring selected portions of the media signal.

10. A system for processing a media signal to indicate the presence of a commercial in the media signal comprising:

circuitry configured to:

receive the media signal;

store a signal measurement value;

monitor the media signal;

while monitoring the media signal, update the stored signal measurement value based on the monitoring;

update a threshold value based on the updated signal measurement value;

determine if the media signal is transitioning to the commercial based on the updated signal measurement value and the updated threshold value; and

indicate the presence of the commercial based on the determination.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the circuitry is further configured to modify the media signal based on the updated signal measurement value; and

the circuitry is configured to determine if the media signal is transitioning to the commercial by being further configured to determine if the modified media signal is transitioning to the commercial.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the media signal comprises an audio signal.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the media signal comprises a video signal.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the updated signal measurement value comprises a lowest signal value of the video signal.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the lowest signal value of the video signal comprises a minimum luminance signal value.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the circuitry is configured to receive the media signal and monitor the media signal substantially simultaneously.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the received media signal was previously modified to reduce the effectiveness of a commercial skip system.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein circuitry is configured to monitor the media signal by being further configured to monitor selected portions of the media signal.
