Abstract

Methods for creating holes in the articular process of the vertebra using a vertebral facet joint drill tool are provided. Methods of using the resulting holes to anchor or stabilize facet joint prosthesis, and also altering the spacing and motion at the facet joints of the vertebral column, are provided.

Claims (31)

1. A method for forming a lumen, comprising:

accessing a first articular process and a second articular process;

positioning a spacer having a hole between a first articular surface of the first articular process and a second articular surface of the second articular process;

positioning a first lumen-forming member against the first articular process; and

actuating an actuator to cause a movement of the first lumen-forming member through the first articular process and the hole to form a through lumen;

wherein actuating the actuator comprises manipulating the actuator by rotation through a threaded surface that interfaces with a threaded surface on a control rod connected to the actuator.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning a plate against the second articular process and supporting the first and the second articular processes during the movement of the first lumen-forming member.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein actuating the actuator comprises manipulating the actuator by pushing or pulling.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein positioning the plate comprises actively manipulating the position or orientation of the plate.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

positioning a first lumen-forming tip of the first lumen-forming member of a lumen-forming device against the first articular process;

positioning a second lumen-forming tip of a second lumen-forming member of the lumen-forming device against the second articular process;

moving the first lumen-forming tip and the second lumen-forming tip to form a lumen through the first articular process and the second articular process.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the through lumen is non-linear.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the through lumen is curved.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the through lumen is curved toward a base of the first articular surface.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning a second lumen-forming member against the second articular process; and actuating the actuator to cause a movement of the second lumen-forming member through the second articular process.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising distracting the articular processes from a first spacing to a second spacing and placing the spacer between the two articular surfaces to maintain the second spacing.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising further actuating the actuator to cause the movement of the first lumen-forming member through the second articular process.

12. A method for forming a lumen, comprising:

accessing a first articular process;

positioning a spacer between the first articular process and a second articular process of a vertebral facet joint;

positioning a lumen-forming arm against a first, outside surface of the first articular process;

manipulating the lumen-forming arm through the first articular process to penetrate a second, facet joint surface of the first articular process, forming the through lumen wherein the through lumen is non-linear; and

manipulating the lumen-forming arm through a hole in the spacer.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising positioning a second lumen-forming arm against a first, outside surface of the second articular process, and manipulating the second lumen-forming arm through the second articular process to penetrate a second, facet joint surface of the second articular process.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising positioning a plate against the second articular process and supporting the first and the second articular processes during the movement of the first lumen-forming member.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein positioning the plate comprises actively manipulating the position or orientation of the plate.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the through lumen is curved.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the through lumen is curved toward a base of the first articular surface.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising distracting the articular processes from a first spacing to a second spacing and placing the spacer between the two articular surfaces to maintain the second spacing.
