Abstract

One embodiment relates to an arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation. The arrangement includes a plurality of photovoltaic modules, each photovoltaic module including a frame. A plurality of individual male alignment features and a plurality of individual female alignment features are included on each frame. Adjacent photovoltaic modules are interlocked by multiple individual male alignment features on a first module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules fitting into and being surrounded by corresponding individual female alignment features on a second module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules. Other embodiments, features and aspects are also disclosed.

Claims (43)

1. An arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation, the arrangement comprising:

a plurality of photovoltaic modules,

each said photovoltaic module including a photovoltaic laminate and a frame supporting the photovoltaic laminate;

a plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module; and

a plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module,

wherein the male and female alignment features are located at positions overlapping the photovoltaic laminate in a direction normal to a plane of the photovoltaic laminate in a stacking direction of the arrangement,

wherein adjacent photovoltaic modules are interlocked by multiple individual male alignment features on a first module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules fitting into and being surrounded by corresponding individual female alignment features on a second module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules, and

wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module are self-clinching such that the individual male alignment features securely attach to the frame upon being pressed into holes in the frame.

2. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module comprises a protruding feature that is separate and apart from other individual male alignment features on the frame.

3. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module comprises a protruding feature that is separate and apart from other individual female alignment features on the frame.

4. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , further comprising a pallet to which the interlocked plurality of photovoltaic modules is strapped.

5. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein the photovoltaic modules are stacked directly on top of each other so that the adjacent photovoltaic modules touch each other.

6. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein each frame supports a plurality of silicon wafers covered on top by a glass layer and with a polymer layer underneath.

7. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 6 , wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame are secured to the frame without passing through a plane of the glass layer.

8. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame are on a top member, and the plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame are on a bottom member.

9. The arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame are on a top member, and the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame are on a bottom member.

10. An arrangement of photovoltaic modules configured for transportation, the arrangement comprising:

a plurality of photovoltaic modules,

each said photovoltaic module including a photovoltaic laminate and a frame supporting the photovoltaic laminate;

a plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module; and

a plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame of each said photovoltaic module,

wherein the male and female alignment features are located at positions overlapping the photovoltaic laminate in a direction normal to a plane of the photovoltaic laminate in a stacking direction of the arrangement,

wherein adjacent photovoltaic modules are interlocked by multiple individual male alignment features on a first module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules fitting into and being surrounded by corresponding individual female alignment features on a second module of the adjacent photovoltaic modules, and

wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame are screwed into screw holes in the frame.

11. A photovoltaic module comprising:

an array of solar cells in a photovoltaic laminate; and

a frame for supporting the photovoltaic laminate;

a plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame; and

a plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame,

wherein the male and female alignment features are located at positions overlapping the photovoltaic laminate in a stacking direction normal to a plane of the photovoltaic laminate,

wherein each of the plurality of individual male alignment features is arranged to fit into and be surrounded by a corresponding individual female alignment feature on a frame of another photovoltaic module,

wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of the photovoltaic module are screwed into screw holes in the frame.

12. The photovoltaic module according to claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of the photovoltaic module comprises a protruding feature that is separate and apart from other individual male alignment features on the frame.

13. The photovoltaic module according to claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame of the photovoltaic module comprises a protruding feature that is separate and apart from other individual female alignment features on the frame.

14. The photovoltaic module according to claim 11 , wherein the frame of the photovoltaic module supports a plurality of silicon wafers covered on top by a glass layer and with a polymer layer underneath.

15. A photovoltaic module comprising:

an array of solar cells in a photovoltaic laminate; and

a frame for supporting the photovoltaic laminate;

a plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame; and

a plurality of individual female alignment features on the frame,

wherein the male and female alignment features are located at positions overlapping the photovoltaic laminate in a stacking direction normal to a plane of the photovoltaic laminate,

wherein each of the plurality of individual male alignment features is arranged to fit into and be surrounded by a corresponding individual female alignment feature on a frame of another photovoltaic module, and

wherein the plurality of individual male alignment features on the frame of the photovoltaic module are self-clinching such that the individual male alignment features securely attach to the frame upon being pressed into holes in the frame.
