Abstract

A tissue repair device. The tissue repair device includes a tubular shaft having a longitudinal bore for delivering biological material to a soft tissue defect, and an awl having a distal end configured for microfracturing bone underlying the defect. The tubular shaft and the awl are movable relative to one another such that the awl is at least partially positioned within the longitudinal bore of the tubular shaft.

2. The tissue repair device of claim 1 , further comprising a handle with a slider, the slider coupled to the awl and operable to move the awl relative to the handle between the first retracted and the second extended positions.

3. The tissue repair device of claim 2 , wherein the tubular shaft includes an access port communicating with the longitudinal bore for receiving a biological material, wherein the access port is outside the handle adjacent a distal end of the handle.

4. The tissue repair device of claim 3 , wherein the handle includes a seal to prevent biological material from flowing into the handle.

5. The tissue repair device of claim 3 , further comprising a delivery device connectable to the access port and delivering biological material.

6. The tissue repair device of claim 1 , further comprising a handle with a slider, the slider coupled to the tubular shaft and operable to move the tubular shaft relative to the handle between a first position in which the distal end of the awl is fully within the longitudinal bore and a second position in which the distal end of the awl is outside the longitudinal bore.

7. The repair device of claim 1 , wherein the tubular shaft includes a distal tip configured for anchoring the distal tip on the tissue.

8. A tissue repair device comprising:

a handle having a slider;

a delivery shaft having proximal end and a distal end, the delivery shaft defining a longitudinal bore for delivering biological material, the proximal end of the delivery shaft coupled to the handle; and

an awl received in the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft, the awl having a distal tip configured for microfracturing, the awl moveable by the slider between a first retracted position in which the distal tip of the awl is inside the delivery shaft and a second extended position in which the distal tip of the awl is extended out of the distal end of the delivery shaft and wherein the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft has an inner diameter substantially equal to an outer diameter of the awl, the awl having an outer longitudinal groove such that a longitudinal passage is defined between the longitudinal bore of the shaft and the groove for flow of biological material when the awl is inside the longitudinal bore in the first retracted position, the longitudinal passage extending to the distal end of the delivery shaft.

9. The repair device of claim 8 , further comprising an access port communicating with the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft for delivering biological material into the delivery shaft, wherein the access port is outside the handle adjacent a distal end of the handle.

10. The repair device of claim 9 , further comprising a delivery device coupled to the access port for delivering biological material to the access port.

11. The repair device of claim 8 , wherein the delivery shaft includes a distal tip configured for anchoring the distal tip on the tissue.

12. The tissue repair device of claim 9 , wherein the handle includes a seal to prevent biological material from flowing into the handle.

13. A tissue repair device comprising:

a handle having a slider;

a delivery shaft defining a longitudinal bore extending from a proximal end to a distal end for use in delivering biological material, the longitudinal bore have a constant inner diameter, the proximal end coupled to the handle and the distal end having a distal tip configured for anchoring the distal tip on the tissue;

an access port communicating with the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft for delivering biological material, wherein the access port is outside the handle adjacent the distal end of the handle;

an awl configured to be received in the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft and having a distal tip configured for microfracturing, the awl having a constant outer diameter to the distal tip and an outer longitudinal groove, the outer diameter of the awl substantially equal to the inner diameter of the longitudinal bore, the awl movable by the slider between a first retracted position in which the distal tip of the awl is inside the delivery shaft and a second extended position in which the distal tip of the awl is extended out of the distal end of the delivery shaft; and

wherein when the awl is in the first retracted position with the distal tip of the awl fully inside the longitudinal bore of the delivery shaft, the awl and the delivery shaft define a longitudinal passage for flow of biological material, where the longitudinal passage is defined between the longitudinal bore of the tubular shaft and the longitudinal groove of the awl, the longitudinal passage extending from the access port to the distal end of the delivery shaft.

14. A tissue repair device comprising:
